Aleppo Burning: Has the Syrian Rebellion Reignited?
The whispers started as a trickle on encrypted messaging apps, then burst onto social media: Aleppo, a city synonymous with Assad’s brutal recapture in 2016, was once again under attack by rebel forces. These weren’t just skirmishes. The videos emerging show the swiftness and intensity of the rebel advance, punctuated by the unsettling imagery of toppled Assad statues and defiant rebel flags. From the frontlines of this rapidly evolving conflict come multiple, and often conflicting, narratives. Are we witnessing a true resurgence of the Syrian rebellion, or a desperate, last-ditch effort? The following video analysis cuts through the noise, examining claims of Ukrainian-trained rebels, Iran’s looming shadow, and the potential for this conflict to spiral into a wider regional conflagration.
Key Takeaways From the Frontlines
Rebel Gains in Aleppo: Multiple videos confirm significant rebel advances in and around Aleppo, a strategically crucial city previously held by the Syrian government. The speed and scale of the offensive, spearheaded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have caught many observers off guard.
Assad’s Vow to Crush the Rebellion: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has publicly vowed to retake lost territory and crush the rebel forces. This rhetoric, familiar from previous phases of the conflict, signals the government’s intent to launch a major counter-offensive.
International Involvement Deepens: Reports suggest potential Ukrainian involvement in training rebel fighters. This claim, alongside confirmations of increased Iranian military support for Assad, highlights the complex web of international actors influencing the conflict. Russia’s continued air support for the Syrian government further complicates the situation.
Humanitarian Crisis Looms: As fighting intensifies, the risk of a renewed humanitarian catastrophe grows. The videos offer glimpses of civilian displacement and the potential for widespread suffering as battles rage in populated areas.
Whither the Syrian Tinderbox?
The current situation in Syria is volatile and unpredictable. While rebel forces have made impressive initial gains, Assad’s vow to counter-attack, backed by significant Russian and Iranian support, suggests a bloody and protracted fight ahead. The alleged Ukrainian training of rebels, if confirmed, adds another layer of complexity to this already tangled conflict. This development could further escalate tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with Syria becoming another proxy battleground in their ongoing confrontation. Furthermore, the involvement of regional actors, including Turkey, Israel, and Hezbollah, creates the potential for a wider regional conflict.

LIVE: Syria on the Boil as Rebels and Government Forces Clash | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Syria is once again in turmoil as President Bashar al-Assad promises to crush rebels who recently swept into Aleppo. Fighters led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched an attack last week, seizing a dozen towns and villages in northern Aleppo. The city was previously controlled by Assad’s government with backing from Iran and Russia. Rebel forces claimed they were making swift progress, moving through several neighbourhoods of the city. Syria has seen intense battles before. Since the conflict started in 2011, it has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions. In recent years, major fighting slowed down as Assad’s government, with help from its allies, regained control of most of Syria, including its major cities. Assad’s forces, with support from Russia, Iran, and regional militias, took back Aleppo in late 2016 after months of heavy bombing and a tight siege. That victory was a turning point in the war, forcing the opposition to retreat. Over the weekend, visuals showing people posing for photos on a toppled statue of Bassil al-Assad, late brother of the president, and a man waving a Syrian opposition flag went viral. Soon, Russian and Syrian jets carried out airstrikes on the rebel-held city of Idlib, killing at least seven people and injuring dozens, according to local rescuers. The Syrian army also announced on Sunday that it had recaptured several towns overrun by rebels during the recent offensive. On Vantage tonight, Palki Sharma brings you the full story.

Syria’s largest city, Aleppo, has fallen to rebel forces, marking a dramatic shift in the civil war that has been largely under President Bashar al-Assad’s control. Led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), opposition fighters seized the city, exploiting weakened focus from Assad’s key allies—Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah. In response, Iran pledged unwavering support, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visiting Damascus and vowing continued cooperation. Iran also deployed thousands of proxy forces to reinforce Syria’s defenses. The conflict’s escalation threatens broader regional instability, with tensions rising between regional powers like Israel, Hezbollah, and Turkey.
