Russians troops have damaged Kurakhove dam reservoir in Ukraineβs eastern Donetsk region, local authorities said on November 11. A video has been released of the moment of explosion in the reservoir. The Kurakhove Reservoir is located on the Vovcha River, with its source in a nearby village. According to regional Governor Vadym Filashkin, the water level in the river near Velyka Novosilka rose by 1.2 meters as of 4 p.m. on Monday. No homes have been flooded, he added. βRussians damaged the dam of the Kurakhove reservoir. This attack potentially poses a threat to residents of settlements on the Vovcha River – both in the Donetsk and Dnipro regions,β he said. Filashkin noted that the Regional State Administration continues to monitor the water level in the river and is ready for any developments. It should be noted that Ukrainian media reported in June last year that Russian troop blew up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, which led to casualties, loss of homes and serious environmental consequences. Meanwhile, Ukrainian expert Mikhail Zhirokhov said that the damage in Kurakhove Reservoir dam could help the Ukrainian Armed Forces, because they would get another water line along which they could hold back the enemy.

On November 11, 2024, the Kurakhove Reservoir dam in Ukraine’s Donetsk Region was damaged by Russian forces The Kyiv Independent reports, resulting in the release of approximately 15 million cubic meters of water. This incident has raised concerns about potential flooding in nearby villages along the Vovcha River, although local officials have reported that no residential flooding has occurred as of now.
Details of the Incident
Location and Damage: The dam is situated near the village of Stari Terny, approximately 25 kilometers from Kurakhove. The attack caused significant water flow into the Vovcha River, with water levels rising by 1.2 meters.
Official Statements: Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, confirmed the damage and noted that while water levels are elevated, there has been no flooding of homes. Roman Padun, head of the Kurakhove City Military Administration, stated that inspections of the dam are currently impossible due to ongoing shelling from Russian forces.
Context and Implications
This incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks on critical infrastructure during the ongoing conflict. Military experts suggest that damaging such infrastructure could be a tactic to disrupt Ukrainian defenses and create chaos in affected areas. The situation remains fluid, with authorities closely monitoring water levels and potential threats to local settlements.
Historical Comparisons
The destruction of the Kurakhove dam echoes previous incidents in the war, such as the Kakhovka dam’s destruction in Kherson Oblast in June 2023, which led to widespread flooding and humanitarian crises. This highlights the strategic significance of such infrastructure in warfare and its impact on civilian populations.
