Dusty here! Smarter, safer ranching! See how drones revolutionize livestock.

Howdy folks! Dusty here, your friendly neighborhood drone salesman and, yes, drone enthusiast (and occasional contributor to “Winged Wonders” magazine!) If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for ways technology can make ranching life a little easier, and maybe even a bit cooler. That’s why I’m stoked to share some incredible insights from the world of drone-powered livestock management. We’ve all seen how these flying wonders can capture stunning aerial footage, but did you know they are rapidly becoming indispensable tools for ranchers, farmers, and livestock professionals worldwide? From counting cattle in a feedlot in a fraction of the time, to herding cattle with greater ease, to keeping ranch hands out of danger, the potential for drones to transform how we manage livestock is massive. Check out the video highlights below for the latest and greatest in Drone-Powered ranching and see the future for yourself!

Key Takeaways from the Field

A Bird’s Eye View of the Future

We’re at the tipping point where drones aren’t just a novel idea in agriculture; they’re becoming a necessity for efficient and sustainable ranching. The increasing development of AI powered autonomous drone flight paired with new sensor technology will likely lead to even more advances in the field. Imagine drones automatically identifying sick animals, separating out individuals, and alerting ranch hands in real time. While drones won’t replace ranch hands completely, they’ll definitely work alongside them, keeping workers safer, and saving precious time and resources in the process. And just think about the data that drones will be able to collect! We’ll be able to analyze the overall health of an entire herd with a level of precision never before possible, allowing ranchers to make better decisions and optimize their operation. It’s pretty darn exciting if you ask me!

How Drones Are Helping Farmers Herd Cattle in Australia Bloomberg Quicktake
10,589 views | 58 | August 17 2020 09:25:44 (1 comments)[ Read more … ] Hundreds of Australian farmers are using drones to make their operations more efficient and for some, it’s also making the job safer.

Instead of it taking three people on quad bikes to round up the cattle, grazier Will Wilson is doing the job with his drone.

“If we are going to be thinking about methodology and about the industry and trying to stay ahead of the times we’ve got to look at technology as it comes along and try and embrace it,” says Wilson.

After completing a full muster with a drone for the first time, he’s now considering making it a permanent practice on his property.

“I’m thinking seriously about a position of someone mustering with the drone full time,” he says.

Wilson says the technology wouldn’t replace jobs on the ground. Workers are still needed to get cattle through the yard.

But the drones are helping to keep musterers out of danger.

“We have had injuries off motorbikes before and obviously horses before that so far I’ve crashed a drone a few times and I still haven’t hurt myself so there is an argument to say it’s a safer way of doing it,” says Wilson.

Industry group Farmsafe is encouraging producers to look for new ways to make the farm a safer workplace.

“Anything that can substitute for a dangerous vehicle or a dangerous machine such as a quad bike and do the job just as effectively, is obviously valuable,” says Farmsafe chairman, Charles Armstrong.

It’s not just cattle properties where drones are coming in handy, farmers are also using them to check crop health and water levels.

And they’re becoming more common place as the technology develops.

Meg Kummerow is a farm drone specialist. She has helped hundreds of graziers incorporate the technology into their operations.

“I think the drone will be something else that they can use in the future, it will be another tool in their toolbox,” says Kummerow.

Something Wilson is already planning for.
