Unseen Skies: Peering into the Murky World of Military Drone Testing
The hum of unseen machinery hangs heavy in the air, a silent sentinel of modern warfare. While many of us glance skyward, wondering what blips traverse the clouds, the reality of cutting-edge military drone testing unfolds often in clandestine locations, from New Jersey suburbs to the vast, open skies above Naval installations. We delve into that obscured world here and on the pages that follow through the lens of on-the-ground reports from the front lines of drone testing programs. What is it about these drone programs that makes some think itβs important enough to spend a billion dollars? Are they all as βscaryβ as they claim? These arenβt questions pondered in an ivory tower. These are the real concerns people, neighbors of test sites, are actively grappling with. This report brings those concerns to light, with a close examination of recent reports from a variety of sources that are all talking about drone technology. In what may become the new norm, the modern battlefield is evolving at a dizzying pace, and drones are at its forefront.
Key Takeaways from the Front Lines
New Jersey Drone Mystery: Reports of unusual drone activity in New Jersey, initially attributed to a possible NASA program and then dismissed, were suggested to be related to an Air Force-led drone program, raising questions about the level of transparency and public awareness in military testing.
Billion-Dollar Investment: The U.S. Army is reportedly investing heavily in new combat drone technologies, with one source claiming a "super advanced" combat drone at $1 billion, signaling a massive financial commitment to unmanned aerial systems for future military operations.
Advanced Tech Showcase: The variety of drone tests includes new jet-powered carrier launched drones as well as experimentation with advanced βairlessβ tire technology on some of the units. The wide ranging tests indicate a deep and broad strategic initiative on many fronts.

Proliferation of UAVs: One of the themes in multiple video reports on drones indicate that itβs becoming apparent that drones are going to be seen everywhere on todayβs battlefield. The rise of military drones has led to increased reports, not all of which have explanations and may mean the public must adapt to a future full of military drone sightings.
Land Based Tests: Even drones that will ultimately be launched from Naval assets are undergoing trials from land bases demonstrating the critical and evolving nature of testing procedures, which appear to include testing all facets of usage scenarios and operations.
Analysis: Drones in the Mainstream
The videos suggest a clear pattern: Military drone technology is rapidly advancing, moving from simple recon devices to high-stakes weapons platforms that are worth investing a lot of time and resources into. The sheer breadth of experimentationβfrom novel airless tires to cutting-edge jet drone operations from Naval assetsβ indicates a multi-faceted approach to deployment. It also indicates this technology is evolving faster than anticipated. The concern surrounding βmystery droneβ reports, combined with a billion-dollar project indicates that the American military strategy includes a commitment to technological leadership and the importance of drones for projecting power in the future.

CORRECTION: NASA has reached out to us to state that they are not involved in the establishment of the drone testing corridor between Delaware and New Jersey.
Per NASA: “NASA plays no part in the agreement to facilitate this corridor. AAM is an industry term referring to the testing and development of future airspace technologies and concepts. It is also the name of a NASA mission covering the same areas.”
NASA also says their December 21, 2023 press release about drone tests in Langley, Virginia could not have been related to drone sightings over Langley AFB that same month because the release simply omitted the fact that the tests were actually conducted 3 months earlier, in September.

After hundreds of reports of unusual drones flying over New Jersey and the surrounding areas, one little-discussed Air Force-led program may just be the answer we’re looking for.

In the 1960s, Lockheed engineer Kelly Johnson was given an almost impossible task by the U.S. Air Force and CIA. He needed to create a spy drone with range, speed, and altitude capabilities that could match the supersonic A-12. The hope was that Lockheedβs Skunk Works team could build an unmanned reconnaissance aircraft unlike any other in order to replace the increasingly vulnerable U-2 spy plane. The result was the D-21. It was a ramjet with wings and a camera, built to self-destruct after its mission. Early tests were promising, but failures to execute correctly when released over China resulted in several missteps and even a Soviet clone…
