Luhansk, also known as Lugansk, is a city in eastern Ukraine which is under the de facto administration of the Luhansk People’s Republic. As of 2021, the population is estimated to be 399,559, making Luhansk the most populous city in Luhansk Oblast, and the 12th largest in Ukraine. On 25 June 2022, Sievierodonetsk was fully occupied by Russian and separatist forces. This was followed by the capture of Lysychansk on 3 July, which brought the all cities of Luhansk Oblast under the control of Russian and separatist forces.
