Front Lines: Tactical Insights from Ukraine Combat Footage

The conflict in Ukraine has become a brutal proving ground for military technologies and tactics, both old and new. Through the lens of open-source combat footage, we gain a visceral understanding of the realities on the ground. These raw, unfiltered glimpses into the front lines offer valuable insights for analysts and observers alike.

Recently released videos offer a glimpse into the evolving nature of this conflict. Russian forces, facing stiff resistance, have been documented employing irregular troops and unconventional tactics, such as using motorcycles for rapid assaults. Conversely, Ukrainian forces have showcased the effectiveness of Western-supplied weaponry like the Bradley IFV, utilizing its firepower to decimate Russian armored advances. This constant back-and-forth reveals the adaptability and resourcefulness of both sides.

The situation on the ground remains fluid, with both sides demonstrating a willingness to adapt and evolve their tactics. The coming weeks will likely see a continuation of the current trends, with Russia increasingly relying on irregular forces and unconventional tactics in the face of mounting losses. Ukrainian forces, meanwhile, will likely continue to leverage their advantages in maneuverability, long-range precision strikes, and drone warfare.

The conflict in Ukraine serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the ever-evolving nature of modern combat. These video glimpses, while disturbing, are crucial to understanding the realities of this conflict.

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Kurakhove direction.

Here, Russian forces regrouped following the lack of success with their intensified attacks against Kostiantynivka and launched a renewed offensive, shifting their focus to a different direction in the region to disrupt Ukrainian logistics and finally achieve a significant breakthrough. Aware of the tactical objectives the Russians aimed to accomplish, the Ukrainians methodically countered their campaigns at each stage of the plan.

The main Russian objective in this area is to reach the local road T-05-24 to disrupt Ukrainian logistics between Kostiantynivka and Vuhledar. Even though there is another supply route to Vuhledar, T-05-24 was the preferred road that the Ukrainian forces used up to this point to deliver munitions, medicine, food and rotate troops to the defenders of this stronghold that has already withstood many mechanized Russian attacks and cost them heavy losses. This is why breaking the supply route to Vuhledar can be the decisive step for the Russians to finally capture this Ukrainian fortress or at least isolate it and force the defenders to leave it.

Ukrainians used the short tactical pause on this part of the frontline to further sustain their local air superiority by continuing to hunt Russian air defense assets within the effective range of their available weapon systems. Geolocated footage published by Ukrainian military bloggers shows how a Russian S-300V air defense system is engaged by a Ukrainian HIMARS launching rockets with cluster munition. In one of the most detailed videos of such strikes until this moment we can see how various elements of the system are targeted separately but repeatedly by these highly effective Western munitions. Consequently, the images show how the rocket launchers, radar, and command center are all destroyed. The original uncensored footage of this operation can be found on our Telegram channel through the link in the description.

Simultaneously both sides launched ground attacks against each other again around Kostiantynivka. Ukrainian drone operators from the 79th Air Assault Brigade published several geolocated videos showing how they target enemy tanks, armored personnel carriers, and infantry with FPV drones and grenades dropped by drones. They tried to further weaken deliveries for Russians on the frontline by also conducting strikes in the rear against Ural supply trucks as seen in this video. One of the most interesting clips is courtesy of the Ukrainian special forces battalion OPFOR which released how they are conducting an operation to clear a tree line just south of the village. Shortly after the first shot is fired, a Ukrainian tank is struck by a Russian kamikaze drone and set ablaze. In a remarkable display of composure, a Ukrainian tank crewman jumps onto the burning vehicle and begins extinguishing the fire. Moments later, the tank is seen retreating to safety, thanks to the soldier’s brave and decisive actions, which not only saved the crew’s lives but also preserved valuable equipment.

The intense conditions created by the Ukrainians around Kostiantynivka forced the Russians to attempt another surprise maneuver further south near the village of Vodyane. Various military analysts from both sides were alarmed by the significant advances made by Russian forces toward the crucial T-05-24 ground line of communication. Geolocated footage published in the last few days shows a Russian armored vehicle rapidly advancing along a tree line up to a point near the road, several kilometers from the previously assessed frontline. The rate and ease of advance of the vehicle suggest that Russian forces likely held additional positions in field areas east of Vuhledar and were able to provide cover for the vehicle as it advanced. Satellite imagery shows additional destroyed Russian vehicles along the same tree line, further confirming that Russian forces have advanced in this area. Russian military bloggers have long emphasized that the foremost tactical objective in the Vuhledar area is for their forces to interdict this road and disrupt Ukrainian supplies to Vuhledar. One of them claimed that he is expecting to see intensified offensive efforts from Russian forces in the coming days in order to support this tactical objective. This claim was partially confirmed by an official statement from the Ukrainian…

Video taken by the 47th Brigade somewhere near the town of Sokil shows at least two Bradleys stopping a Russian assault. The Russians have landed troops in a tree-line belonging to the Ukrainians, and the 47th sent Bradleys to fight them back. Video shows the tree-line lighting up with fire from the Bradleys’ Bushmaster chain guns, firing high-explosive shells. As one Bradley stops shooting the other takes up the fire, keeping the Russians suppressed as they both go in for a closer look. The 47th is the main Ukrainian brigade using the Bradleys, which featured heavily in fighting around Avdiivka. During that battle two of the vehicles were able to take out one of Russia’s best tanks, the T-90M. The Bradleys were able to blind the tank’s sensors, causing it to crash before a drone finished it off. Avdiivka was eventually captured by Russia, so the Bradleys refocused on stopping Russia’s advance to the west of the city. The armoured vehicles were used to wipe out Russian BTRs and the troops they were carrying into battle. Again, their chain guns proved lethally effective against the BMPs notoriously thin armour and against infantry. Particularly heavy fighting happened in the town of Berdychi, where the Russians were held up for weeks without moving forward. Ultimately the Russians have been making slow gains in the area, but the Bradleys have ensured it has come at a high cost. The first time the Bradleys appeared in Ukraine was during Kyiv’s counter-attack in the south last summer. They helped captured the town of Berdychi from Russia. It was hoped the vehicles would prove effective at breaking Russian lines, but they ultimately fell short of this goal. However, they undoubtedly helped save the lives of their crews while inflicting heavy losses on their enemies. #BradleyIVF #Bradley #russia #ukraine #war

Russia is increasingly using irregular military formations in offensive operations against Ukraine. Such units are more vulnerable and have apparently suffered significantly heavier losses than other enemy units over the past nine months.

The British Ministry of Defence announced this. As noted on the department’s page on the X social network, the Russian Federation is using the aforementioned formations despite the fact that they are unprepared, untrained and have no artillery or air support. This makes them more vulnerable than units of the regular Russian army. One example of such Russian units is the “Volunteer Corps”, created in 2023, consisting of more than 20 thousand reservists, mercenaries and ex-convicts, the British Ministry of Defence noted. The agency also states that these formations serve in irregular units under a single command and control.

“These formations have probably suffered proportionally greater losses over the past nine months compared to Russian regular units,” the ministry said.

Earlier it became known that an 18-year-old Russian occupier who wanted to “earn money for his family” in the war was liquidated at the front. The invader turned 18 a month before his death, and he decided to sign a contract instead of being drafted into the army. He was liquidated seven days later, according to Obozrevatel media outlet.

The Russian military, facing significant losses in Ukraine, increasingly relies on unconventional units like the Volunteer Corps. Established in 2023, this unit comprises volunteers, reservists, mercenaries, and ex-prisoners, totaling around 20,000 men. These irregular forces, often lacking artillery or air support, are vulnerable and suffer high casualty rates. Despite this, they conduct various operations, from sabotage to amphibious raids. The conflict’s toll is heavy, with Russia losing over 1,000 troops daily and approximately 550,000 men since the war began. The Russian military is fighting a war in Ukraine that is stretching its very fabric. Increasingly, Russian commanders have to rely on unconventional and irregular units to make up for the destructive losses Russian line units suffer every day on the frontlines. http://youtube.com/kanal13az/join – click here and support Kanal13 monthly for distributing more videos and independent journalism

The use of motorcycles by Russian occupiers at the front cannot be looked down upon. This statement was made by Dmitry Likhovoy, spokesman for the Operational-Strategic Group of Forces “Khortitsa” of Ukraine.

“Of course, you can approach this in the context of “necessity is the mother of invention”. However, we have already seen examples more than once when the enemy tries to adapt to the realities that arise. They use ATVs, as was the case in the winter in the Tavrichesky direction. Now they use motorcycles, when weather conditions allow it,” he explained.

According to him, a motorcycle gives the enemy the opportunity to gain time to get closer to the points where they can dismount and take a seat.

“How do they fight them? The first means is FPV drones. Drones are now very actively used in many manifestations. It is FPV drones, attack drones, drops, artillery and mortars that are aimed at hitting motorcyclists, even when they are detected by aerial reconnaissance somewhere else on the other side of the field. It is very important to destroy them in advance, because when they get closer, there may already be bad consequences,” noted Dmitry Likhovy.

As the Russian military runs low on purpose-made armored vehicles and increasingly turns to civilian vehicles—most notably, golf carts and motorcycles—one Russian army brigade is making motorcycle instruction a routine part of its training regimen.

“The motorcycle school is real,” one Russian blogger wrote in a recent post about the 5th Donetsk Brigade, which fights in and around the town of Krasnohorivka in eastern Ukraine.

According to Forbes, the Russians began assigning large numbers of Chinese and Belarusian dirt bikes to front-line troops back in the spring. The bikes, along with Chinese Desertcross all-terrain vehicles—golf carts, effectively—are helping mitigate growing shortages of armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles as Russia’s wider war on Ukraine grinds toward its 29th month and vehicle losses deepen.

The Russians have written off more than 16,000 armored vehicles and other heavy weapons in Ukraine. That’s more heavy equipment than many armies have in their entire inventories. The bike troops’ assault tactics are simple. They ride as fast as possible across the mine-strewn no-man’s-land separating Russian and Ukrainian lines, hoping their mounts’ small size and high speed will help them avoid detection by Ukrainian drones. If they manage to cross the mine and drone zone, they ditch their bikes and fight on foot. “A new military specialty is appearing,” a second blogger wrote. “Motorized rifleman.” But the bike tactics, while sound in theory, haven’t worked very well in the heat and stress of actual combat. Ukrainian mines and drones are everywhere—too thick in the air and under the ground for even the nimblest biker to avoid. http://youtube.com/kanal13az/join – click here and support Kanal13 monthly for distributing more videos and independent journalism
