Russian forces eliminated nearly all 32 terrorists affiliated with Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev. During his visit, Putin also toured the school premises, which has since been transformed into a memorial complex. He also paid homage to the soldiers of the elite Alfa and Vympel units who perished during the operation and later met with members of the ‘Mothers of Beslan’ organisation to express his condolences.
