In the heart of a high-stakes mission, an F-22 Raptor, piloted by one of America’s top aviators, streaks across the sky. While its advanced systems and unmatched agility set it apart, it isn’t flying alone.
Just off its wing, moving in perfect harmony is the General Atomics XQ-67A.
With its cutting-edge design and stealthy features, this sleek aircraft is the Raptor’s loyal wingman. The XQ-67A’s advanced infrared search and track systems scan the horizon, detecting threats that radar might miss. It gathers and relays critical intelligence while its electronic warfare systems disrupt enemy communications and radar.
As the mission intensifies, the XQ-67A simulates attacks to draw enemy fire, reveals hidden threats, and acts as a communication relay. It even executes precise strikes on high-value targets; all coordinated flawlessly with the F-22.
However, despite its capabilities and seamless cooperation, the XQ-67A, the fifth-generation fighterβs most dependable companion, is completely unmanned.

The Air Force Research Laboratory successfully flew the first of a second-generation of Autonomous Collaborative Platforms known as the XQ-67A demonstrator, built and flown in the Off-Board Sensing Station (OBSS) program Feb. 28, 2024.
The AFRL Off-Board Sensing Station program is the validation of a design, build and test process that has resulted in the XQ-67A. It is the first of its kind to be built on a common chassis or genus β much like that of a motor vehicle frame β and with its first successful flight, the XQ-67A is proof that the genus approach works. This enables a faster and more cost-effective replication of the aircraft.
This new approach also responds to the challenge of great power competition by speeding delivery of affordable, advanced capabilities to the warfighter.
The XQ-67A is remotely piloted but is capable of autonomous flight.
The first test flight of the XQ-67A, took place at the General Atomics Gray Butte Flight Operations Facility near Palmdale, California.

The US Air Force at this point is almost bragging, because they have also revealed details aboutthe first flight of its newest drone, the XQ-67A. It is a fully autonomous aircraft that is expected to become, quote, “faster and more maneuverable, with less endurance but longer range.” The new drones will accompany manned combat aircraft as a disposable reconnaissance and power platform. They will form the basis for an entire family of drones, accelerating their development and deployment. So far, the XQ-67A has only been tested for safety and flight performance, with the drone being controlled remotely by humans. So it’s still a long way away from performing autonomous missions.
