Today there are a lot of updates from the Kharkiv direction.
The most interesting news comes from the area of Lyptsi. Here, the Russians degraded their main offensive forces to the point where the only way to compensate for the losses became the recruitment and deployment of mercenaries from Central Africa and Sri Lanka.
In this region, the Russians are struggling to advance with a limited number of troops, attempting to justify the Kharkiv offensive that has so far failed to achieve its declared objectives. Approximately eight thousand Russian soldiers are engaged in the fighting in Kharkiv, significantly outnumbered by Ukrainian forces by at least three to one. Consequently, the Russians are unable to make headway due to fierce resistance and heavy losses. Without reinforcements, their position in the region is at risk of collapsing.
The Kharkiv front has often been neglected by the Russian command, resulting in a shortage of reinforcements from regular troops. This neglect led to the deployment of foreign mercenaries from Africa, speculated to be associated with the Wagner Group. The Wagner Group previously maintained a substantial presence in Africa, with numerous military instructors and recruitment centers across Central Africa.
However, it turned out that these were African recruits of the Russian army. While they are not part of the Wagner Group, it is highly likely that the Russian army is using Wagner’s infrastructure in Africa for recruiting mercenaries. Additionally, many former Wagner fighters have joined the Russian military in units like Storm-Z, suggesting that Wagner instructors in Africa have likely participated in organizing the African Corps.
The Russian government is actively trying to attract individuals from Africa and developing nations by offering a monthly salary of two thousand two hundred dollars, health insurance, and Russian citizenship for recruits and their families. This offer is highly appealing to many people from underdeveloped regions, such as Burundi, Congo, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, where the average monthly income ranges from fifteen to fifty dollars.
The Russian Africa Corps, established in December 2023, comprises around two thousand fighters, including officers, soldiers, experienced mercenaries, and new recruits, many of whom previously served in Wagner. According to British intelligence, the Russian command deployed the Africa Corps to the Belgorod region in April. This deployment was later confirmed by footage from the area.
In one such video, an African mercenary, likely separated from his squad, is detected by a Ukrainian drone. The mercenary helplessly tries to defend himself from the drone using a wooden stick. Such irregular and ineffective actions by foreign mercenaries result from inadequate training and instructions, amplified by a significant language barrier. However, even if we set aside the low quality of African mercenaries, even the deployment of the entire African Corps of two thousand servicemen will still not be enough to hold the lines in the Kharkiv direction. To address the manpower shortage, the Russian army has expanded its recruitment campaign to Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan and Russian delegations, including Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Formin, have met to discuss the involvement of Sri Lankan nationals in the Russian army. It is known that over two hundred Sri Lankans have died in the conflict so far, and ongoing Russian recruitment efforts could attract many more mercenaries. Additional footage confirms the deployment of Sri Lankan mercenaries, including one fighter who was fortunate enough to be captured.
The recent summit between Putin and Kim Jong-Un may indicate further deployment of foreign fighters to the front in Ukraine, particularly in the Kharkiv direction. Although North Korean troops or mercenaries have not been deployed, Russia has used North Korean Hwasong ballistic missiles to strike Kharkiv city. In addition to the missiles, a substantial quantity of artillery shells was supplied to the Russians. Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade charged and captured a Russian trench in Kharkiv as Putin’s men are pushed back. Video shows the attack unfolding, as the First Assault Battalion move into a Russian trench network, thought to be in Borova. The unit, which is specialised in attack operations, works fast using rifles and grenades to clear out hiding spots within the trench. Ukrainian artillery and FPV drones work in close coordination with the unit, precisely hitting parts of the trench they have yet to clear while avoiding hitting them. But they know it is only a matter of time before the Russians start hitting back, meaning speed is of the essence. Eventually, the Russians catch up to them and start using their own FPV drones to hit the attackers. One man is struck by shrapnel, badly injuring his hand and arm. A second squad then moves in to continue the attack, bandage up the wounded man, and get everyone back alive. With reinforcements, the 1st Assault Battalion are able to successfully complete their mission. Russian units are massing troops to try and break through Ukrainian lines at Borova, to the west of Kharkiv city, the commander of the 3d Assault has said. But so far their efforts have proved in vain, and the Brigade has managed to push them back. Kharkiv is the target of a Russian assault that has been ongoing since May, but has met with limited success. Here, both Russian and Ukrainian forces continue to engage in intense combat for control of northern Vovchansk, with recent updates shedding light on the dire situation facing Russian troops.
Recent reports and footage have revealed that the Russian military is redeploying wounded soldiers to frontline combat in the Kharkiv direction. Social media images show soldiers from the 26th Tank Regiment, located northwest of Vovchansk, visibly injured, in casts, and on crutches, being sent to the front lines despite still undergoing medical treatment. This information originated from a Russian military analyst, who noted that this practice has been ongoing for a considerable time. This desperate measure underscores the severe shortage of Russian troops, leading to refusals and near-revolts within the ranks.
Several days ago, Ukrainian Khortytsia Group Spokesperson Nazar Voloshyn reported that some Russian soldiers in the Vovchansk direction, particularly those from the 153rd Tank Regiment, are refusing to fight. This highlights the severe morale issues and high casualty rates plaguing the Russian military. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently noted that Russian losses on some frontlines, especially in the Kharkiv direction, are as high as six to one compared to Ukrainian losses.
The high cost of Russian attempts to advance in northern Vovchansk is evident. Despite their efforts, Russian forces have struggled to make significant progress due to a shortage of adequately trained personnel and the heavy casualties they have sustained.
Ukrainian forces maintain control over most buildings within the Citadel, actively working to thwart Russian advances and disrupt the connection between Russian forces to the west and those entrenched at the aggregate plant. Recent geolocated images have shown Ukrainian efforts to advance westward, in an area halfway between the Citadel and the aggregate plant. One video depicts an FPV drone attack on a now-destroyed medical center west of the aggregate plant, where several Russian soldiers were sheltering. The drone footage provides an updated perspective of the entire area, highlighting the Citadel, the aggregate plant, and the areas near Soborna Street, which serves as a frontline for much of its length. After locating the Russian soldiers, Ukrainian drone operators executed an attack on the medical center, revealing that very few intact roofed areas remain. Recent Ukrainian reports indicate ongoing efforts to encircle Russian troops at the Vovchansk Aggregate Plant. A Ukrainian soldier mentioned that the approaches to the plant are now under the fire control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, making it extremely risky for Russian forces to receive reinforcements or ammunition supplies.
Conversely, Russian forces have reclaimed areas previously advanced by Ukrainians on Korolenka and Soborna Streets. Currently, they are attempting to seize the first buildings west of the Citadel. A recent geolocated video shows a Russian drone delivering medical supplies to soldiers of the 2nd Spetsnaz Battalion in one of the buildings within the Citadel. Although Russian military analysts claim this area is under Russian control, the need to use a drone for medical supply deliveries suggests that these troops might be surrounded or have severely compromised logistic access.
Facing an extreme shortage of troops and high casualty rates, the Russians have begun constructing defensive lines as a precaution. This defensive posture indicates their acknowledgment of the significant challenges in sustaining an offensive in Vovchansk and maintaining control over their positions.
A prominent Russian military blogger recently criticized the Russian military command for their lack of progress in the Vovchansk direction. He highlighted that Russian forces are far from achieving their objective of creating a 15-kilometer buffer zone and are struggling with coordination in the Vovchansk area.
