Ukraine, Israel buying Chinese civilian drones for combat use; shun US military-grade drones. Inside China Business
41,248 views | 2,072 | April 11 2024 21:26:52 (578 comments)[ Read more … ] Ukrainian and IDF forces strongly prefer Chinese drones to US-built drones, in their respective combat operations. This according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal since February of last year.

US-built drone weapons are less reliable, more easily jammed by Electronic Warfare efforts, and do not fly as far or with payloads as advertised. China drones are also far less costly.

The Chinese-built drones are commercial grade, and are purchased off-the-shelf by volunteers who then send them to either Ukraine or Israel, where they are repurposed for combat use. The main producer of these Chinese-built drones, DJI of Shenzhen, strongly opposes the use of their equipment in military applications.

The strong preference of allied countries for Chinese civilian drones over American military drones, and the stark differences in battlefield performance, do lead to very disturbing questions; namely, how much better still are Chinese military-grade drones? How were the Russians able to overwhelm the GPS signals in the US-made drones? If the US companies that build our drones admit publicly the enormous challenges they face, what concerns do they share only privately?

This series of videos is meant to demonstrate to students that there are many types of computing systems, including drones, that are vulnerable to cybersecurity issues.

This series of videos is meant to provide an overview of applications of cybersecurity (e.g., maritime, aviation, supply chain, etc.) normally not discussed in information technology or cybersecurity courses, which help provide a broadening of a students understanding of how cybersecurity affects these domains, and its importance therein.

A forward looking paper published by the Joint Special Operations University on how sUAS may change the future of warfare, co-authored by Dr. Craiger, is: J. P. Craiger and D.M. Zorri. (September 2019). Current Trends in Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS); Implications for U.S. Special Operations Forces. Occasional Paper. MacDill AFB, FL: Joint Special Operations University Press. This paper can be downloaded here: https://jsou.edu/Press/AuthorDashboard?name=Dr%20Philip%20Craiger

The intended audiences for these videos include high school, community college, and lower-level university students who are interested in, or participating in, cybersecurity, information technology, or associated programs. Additionally, the first video in a series is broad enough to be understood by a general audience.
