DIY Drone Remote ID: Unlock the Skies – Your Compliance Journey Starts Now
Let’s be honest, nobody loves regulations. But when it comes to flying our drones, Remote ID is here to stay. These YouTube videos break down everything you need to know, from picking the right module for your self-built FPV racer to understanding the March 2024 deadline. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, getting compliant doesn’t have to be a headache. This page distills the essential info so you can spend less time deciphering legalese and more time in the air.
Remote ID Essentials: Your Quick-Start Guide
Deadline Alert: The FAA has extended the deadline for broadcast module compliance to March 16, 2024. Make sure you’re ready! No more excuses!
DIY Options: Building your own drone? Videos like "RemoteID so tiny you’ll barely know it’s there! Phoenix mRID!" and "How to add Remote ID to an FPV drone" offer practical, step-by-step guidance for integrating Remote ID modules. Say goodbye to bulky add-ons!
Module Mania: Not all modules are created equal. The "Which Remote ID Module is Right For You? — COMPLETE TEST" video offers a comprehensive comparison, helping you choose the perfect fit for your needs and budget. Think of it as a "Goldilocks" guide to Remote ID – find the one that’s just right.
Compliance Confusion? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Resources like the FAA’s UAS Declaration of Compliance website (uasdoc.faa.gov/listDocs) can help determine if your drone already meets the requirements. Check it out! You might already be good to go.
Fighting the Good Fight (Smartly): While some express concerns about Remote ID, videos like "RemoteID: Fight It? Ignore It? Comply with it?!" emphasize the importance of understanding the rules and working within the system to advocate for positive change. Let’s be strategic, not reckless.
The Future is Now: Remote ID and Beyond
As Remote ID becomes the standard, we can expect to see further miniaturization and integration of these modules. Imagine a future where Remote ID is seamlessly built into every drone, eliminating the need for bulky add-ons altogether. We can also anticipate the development of more sophisticated apps and software for monitoring and managing drone traffic, paving the way for safer and more complex airspace operations. Exciting times are ahead!

Wait! Before we get into this, remember, you only need a module if you drone ISN’T currently remote ID compliant. Where do you check? https://uasdoc.faa.gov/listDocs and filter by RID. This will tell you if you drone is complaint with RID. If it is listed here, you don’t need one of these modules unless you have other older drones. All of the modules we’re about to discuss are FAA approved at this time.
For recreational operators… You only need ONE module. This will work for all of your recreationally registered drones. You can swap in between flights to ensure both your Mavic Pro and your foam park flyer are compliant.
For Part 107, You need a module for EVERY drone that isn’t currently compliant… Each module will need to be registered to the aircraft’s registration number in the FAA DroneZone.
Alright, let’s get to it starting with approved stand along broadcast modules. These have internal batteries, can be turned on and off via a button or switch, and would be most useful to those who don’t want to wire anything up, or have an older DJI or Autel drone. We’ll be looking at how long the module runs for, how much it weighs, the overall size of the module, the range and the cost. For our tests, no settings were changed.
Alright, that wraps up stand alone modules. Next up, we’re going to cover the available add-ons. These are modules that require power to operate, but contain everything else (GPS, broadcast system, etc) needed to be compliant. This is best for the folks who are flying foamies or FPV and just want to plug in the device to comply.
