Drone Remote ID Range: Just How Far Can "Karen" See Your Drone? 📍
Ever wondered how far your drone’s Remote ID broadcast reaches? Or perhaps, more importantly, how far away someone with a Remote ID tracking app can "spot" you? We’ve dived deep into several popular YouTube videos exploring Remote ID range, module types, and even how these broadcasts impact flight performance (or not!). These videos offer hands-on tests, module comparisons, and crucial insights into the current Remote ID landscape. Understanding these concepts is vital, not just for complying with regulations, but for making informed choices about which module best suits your flying style and needs.
Key Takeaways from the Drone Remote ID Experts
Module Variety: Multiple Remote ID broadcast modules are available, ranging from simple add-ons to standalone units. Some popular options highlighted are the Pierce Aerospace B1, BlueMark DB series, DroneTag Mini/Beacon, and Spektrum Sky ID.
Range Testing: Real-world tests show Remote ID signals can be tracked from considerable distances, often several kilometers, using readily available smartphone apps. One video even explores locating a drone pilot using various module brands like Potensic, Holy Stone, and DroneTag.
Module Selection: Choosing the right module depends on your drone type. Standalone modules are suitable for older drones lacking built-in Remote ID, while add-on modules are a compact solution for smaller craft and FPV setups.
Compliance is Key: The videos emphasize the importance of Remote ID compliance, outlining the FAA’s rules and highlighting resources like the UAS Declaration of Compliance database. Several videos offer practical advice on registering modules and understanding the legalities.
Impact on Flight Performance: While some speculate about potential performance impacts, current evidence suggests most Remote ID modules have negligible effects on flight time or range for the average hobbyist.
Remote ID on the Horizon: Emerging Trends and Future Flight
The landscape of Remote ID is constantly evolving. As more modules become available and regulations are further refined, it’s critical to stay informed. The growing popularity of tracking apps signifies increased public awareness and potential scrutiny of drone operations. Future trends may include enhanced security features in Remote ID systems and more sophisticated tracking capabilities.

I have made a Remote ID Range test to see how you can be spotted by using a free drone scanner app for Android in the Play Store. Remote identification, or RemoteID, from January 1st. 2024, it is mandatory in the EU for Drones like DJI Air 3, DJI Mavic 3 Classic, DJI Mavic 3 Pro, and all other DJI Drones to be operated in the open category in Europe under the New 2024 Drone Law. DJI Mini 4 Pro is not REQUIRED to have RemoteID enabled in EU

Before we get into this, remember, you only need a module if you drone ISN’T currently remote ID compliant. Where do you check? https://uasdoc.faa.gov/listDocs and filter by RID. This will tell you if you drone is complaint with RID. If it is listed here, you don’t need one of these modules unless you have other older drones. All of the modules we’re about to discuss are FAA approved at this time.
For recreational operators… You only need ONE module. This will work for all of your recreationally registered drones. You can swap in between flights to ensure both your Mavic Pro and your foam park flyer are compliant. For Part 107, You need a module for EVERY drone that isn’t currently compliant… Each module will need to be registered to the aircraft’s registration number in the FAA DroneZone. Alright, let’s get to it starting with approved stand along broadcast modules. These have internal batteries, can be turned on and off via a button or switch, and would be most useful to those who don’t want to wire anything up, or have an older DJI or Autel drone. We’ll be looking at how long the module runs for, how much it weighs, the overall size of the module, the range and the cost. For our tests, no settings were changed. Alright, that wraps up stand alone modules. Next up, we’re going to cover the available add-ons. These are modules that require power to operate, but contain everything else (GPS, broadcast system, etc) needed to be compliant. This is best for the folks who are flying foamies or FPV and just want to plug in the device to comply.

In this video I show you the Bwine B112 Remote ID Broadcast Module (RID). I attached the module to the HS900 Sirius drone and demonstrated the device. A RID module is needed to be compliant with FAA regulations for drones over 250g that do not already have standard RID built in. The Bwine B112 is small light and easy to use.
