LieferMichel: Key Flight Highlights

Beyond the Buzz: Mapping LieferMichel’s Trajectory

LieferMichel isn’t just a cool tech demo; it’s a carefully orchestrated pilot project with serious ambitions. The consistent funding from the German government underscores the strategic importance of innovative air mobility solutions, especially for rural regions. We’re seeing a concerted effort to not only test the technology but also to build a sustainable ecosystem. The partnerships with diverse entities like REWE (groceries), PROFI MERTENS (DIY), Bären-Apotheke (pharmacy), Vodafone (likely for connectivity), and Riese & Müller (cargo bikes) highlight a holistic approach. This isn’t just about drones flying solo; it’s about integrating drone delivery into a seamless logistics chain, with electric cargo bikes handling the last mile – a smart, eco-conscious touch.

Looking ahead, LieferMichel is laying the groundwork for wider adoption of drone delivery in Germany and potentially beyond. The data gathered on demand, operational safety in unrestricted airspace, and winter performance will be invaluable. Imagine a future where drone delivery networks become commonplace, not just for groceries and tools, but for critical medical supplies, urgent documents, and countless other applications. LieferMichel is more than just a project name; it’s a symbol of Germany’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of drone technology and shaping the future of delivery.

Germany-based drone delivery project LieferMichel recently announced a new partnership with Michelstadt-based DIY store PROFI MERTENS to deliver small items by an electric cargo bike or by a Wingcopter delivery drone. Customers can choose from a range of objects weighing up to 4 kg (8.8 lbs), from fasteners to screwdrivers and other small tools.

Founded in 1964, PROFI MERTENS is a third-generation family business in the Odenwald region that serves both commercial and individual customers.

The Wingcopter 198 delivery drone being used has a range of up to 110 km and is specifically designed for wind resistance. The innovative design combines rotor and fixed wing functionality and features extensive failsafes for maximum peace of mind, including two batteries and a redundant flight control system.

“We are delighted to be part of this innovative project and to be able to offer our customers in W rzberg and Rehbach an additional service. When my grandfather opened our first store 90 years ago, he very quickly purchased a small van to be able to deliver to customers further away. Today, we make shopping easier for customers by flying orders for smaller goods to them by drone – a great development,” comments Stephan Mertins, Managing Director of PROFI MERTINS.

“It’s great that more and more retailers from a wide range of product categories are taking part in this pilot project. This underlines the fact that companies, especially in rural regions, are open to new approaches and are thinking about how they can make life easier for their customers,” says Ansgar Kadura, co-founder and Chief Services Officer of Wingcopter.

Prof. Dr. Kai-Oliver Schocke, President of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, adds: “The project shows how necessary it is to supply the population in rural areas with all the products they need on a daily basis!”

LieferMichel is a joint venture by Wingcopter and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) as part of the “Innovative Air Mobility” funding directive. The goal of the project is to explore drone delivery as a commercial project. Additional partners include the city of Michelstadt, REWE, Vodafone and Riese & M ller are also involved in the project.

Residents of Michelstadt served by Wingcopter‘s LieferMichel pilot project are set to benefit from an extension of services, as non-prescription medicines are now included in the project’s offerings.

The project, which continues until the end of March, aims to achieve key objectives related to safe drone flight operations in unrestricted airspace, even during winter months. Additionally, it seeks to analyze the demand for delivery services in rural areas over an extended timeframe.

Drone Delivery Medicines MichelstadtAs part of the expansion, the local B ren-Apotheke pharmacy has integrated into the LieferMichel platform, offering a selection of non-prescription medicines. This addition complements the existing range of goods available from the local REWE center, Odenwaldbox, and SV Darmstadt 98 fan merchandise.

Frank Buffleb, pharmacist and owner of B ren Apotheke in Erbach, expresses enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact on local supply options. “Here in rural areas, the long distances often make it difficult for sick people to get their medication quickly. We are therefore very pleased to be gaining initial experience with drone-based deliveries as part of the LieferMichel project.”

Ansgar Kadura, co-founder and Chief Services Officer of Wingcopter, notes the significance of delivering medicines directly to end customers. “This is an exciting learning experience and an important milestone in this project,” he adds.

The LieferMichel project, a collaboration between Wingcopter and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), aims to test the use of new technologies in regular operations. Residents in the Michelstadt districts of W rzberg and Rehbach can order various products online through www.liefermichel.de and have them delivered by Wingcopter delivery drones to fixed landing points outside the villages. The last few meters to the customer’s front door are covered by electric cargo bikes, ensuring a convenient, quick, and emission-free delivery process.

Prof. Dr. Kai-Oliver Schocke, President of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, highlights the expansion of services as an indication of the project’s attractiveness and the demand for individual services in the sector.

Wingcopter, a German manufacturer of unmanned, all-electric delivery drones, specializes in enhancing medical supply chains and logistics for urgently needed goods. The company’s patented tilt-rotor mechanism and proprietary software algorithms enable efficient vertical takeoff and landing, along with long-distance flight capabilities.

With over 2,000 kilometers flown to date, the LieferMichel project involves collaboration with project partners Vodafone and Riese & M ller. Wingcopter’s investors include the European Investment Bank, REWE Group, Salvia, XAI technologies, and others.
