(27 Mar 2019) A senior official from the Western-backed Palestinian Authority on Wednesday accused US President Donald Trump of backing Israeli “acquisition of territory” .
Speaking to reporters in a news conference in Ramallah, Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Executive Committee, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump were moving in a direction towards destroying the Palestinian Authority.
“The first step was annexation to recognition of Jerusalem as its capital and moving the embassy, the second step Israel sovereignty over the Golan, the third step will be annexation of the West Bank and the fourth step will be declaring, the recognition of the Trump administration of the state of Gaza,” said Erekat.
Erekat’s comments came two days after Trump signed a proclamation recognising Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, reversing more than a half-century of US policy in the Middle East.
The US is the first country to recognise Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan, which the rest of the international community regards as Israeli-occupied.
