Inside Syria's prisons: torture, executions & a cycle of violence. Uncover the chilling truth behind Assad's regime & ISIL's reign of terror.

Whispers from the Abyss: Saydnaya’s Unseen Scars

The world has seen glimmers of the Syrian conflict – the shattered cities, the desperate exodus of refugees, the geopolitical chessboard on which powers spar. But beyond the headlines, deep within the bowels of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, lies a darkness seldom glimpsed, a hell meticulously crafted: Saydnaya Prison. This isn’t just another detention facility; it’s a meticulously engineered system of dehumanization, a place where hope itself is a dangerous contraband. These curated YouTube videos, fragments of a larger, agonizing mosaic, offer a chilling glimpse into the abyss. They force us to confront a question that echoes through the corridors of Saydnaya and into our own conscience: how do we bear witness to suffering so profound, so intentionally inflicted, and what are we prepared to do about it? What if this facility is only one of many? How can we tell the scale of abuse within a regime so powerful, well-funded, and dangerous? These are not merely academic questions – within this conflict, they are matters of life and death.

Key Insights: Echoes of Suffering from Saydnaya’s Depths

Beyond the Walls: A Looming Crisis

The videos highlighted here, when considered in the context of the Syrian Civil War, point to a deeply troubling trend: the weaponization of imprisonment. Detention facilities have become instruments of terror, not just for the regime but for various factions within the conflict. This not only perpetuates human rights abuses on a massive scale but also fuels the very conflict it’s meant to contain. The risk of radicalization within these prisons, coupled with the psychological trauma inflicted on detainees, suggests a future where the seeds of violence sown today will continue to bear bitter fruit for years to come, potentially destabilizing the entire region. This is further exemplified by the discussion of radicalization occurring in the SDF-controlled prisons. While the U.S. led a campaign to defeat the Islamic State five years ago, there are still some 10,000 ISIS fighters who remain jailed in the country. This means that there is likely to be continued abuses within the region.

Witness to Atrocity

These videos are not just news clips; they are fragments of lives shattered, testimonies of resilience and despair. They serve as a stark reminder that the Syrian conflict is not just a geopolitical struggle, but a human tragedy unfolding in real time. The stories of Saydnaya’s survivors are a call to action, a demand that we look beyond the statistics and recognize the individual lives brutalized by this system. Watch the videos below and allow the voices within to pierce the veil of indifference. It is through bearing witness that we can begin to imagine a path toward justice and accountability.

Videos of the rebels’ rescue show the mix of joy, fear, confusion and heartbreak as prisoners are liberated, but only some are reunited with their families.

Survivors of the Assad regime’s Saydnaya prison have described it as “hell on earth”, while human rights organisations have called for an immediate investigation.

As Syria prepares for its next chapter, here is a look at what happened inside the country’s worst prison.

This operation marks a significant moment in the ongoing Syrian conflict, shedding light on the plight of detainees held in some of the most harrowing conditions imaginable.

Reports indicate that the rebels targeted the high-security facility in Saydnaya, a town located just 30 kilometers north of Damascus. The group managed to infiltrate the prison and secure the release of a number of women and children, who had been held in captivity under grim circumstances. Details of the operation remain sparse, but it is clear that the rescued prisoners were among the many individuals subjected to the brutal conditions of the Saydnaya detention complex.

For years, the prison has served as a stronghold for political and ideological repression under the Assad regime, holding thousands of detainees accused of opposing the government. The inclusion of children among the released prisoners highlights the deeply troubling nature of the Syrian conflict, where even the youngest and most vulnerable individuals are often caught in its crossfire.

Saydnaya Prison has long been emblematic of the Assad regime’s harsh and oppressive rule. Established as a military detention facility, it gained international infamy during the Syrian Civil War for its widespread human rights abuses.

Often referred to as a “human slaughterhouse,” the prison has been the subject of numerous investigations by human rights organizations. According to Amnesty International, as many as 13,000 people were executed in Saydnaya between 2011 and 2015 alone. These executions were often carried out in secrecy, with detainees subjected to sham trials or no trials at all.

This number becomes attached to the detainee, like his name, and he is called by it. 🛑 Bab Al-Musalla Square It is one of the squares of Damascus, located in Al-Midan Al-Tahtani neighborhood, separating it from Al-Wastani Square. The square is known as Bab Al-Musalla Roundabout, and its official name is currently Yarmouk Square 🛑 The region’s branch in Damascus… Assad’s terrorism that only the detainees know about

Branch “227”, or what is known as the “Region” branch, is located opposite the Ministry of Higher Education within the security square in the Al-Tawjih area, which Assad has recently fortified, preventing cars from passing near it from all directions. “227” belongs to the Military Intelligence Division, headed by Major General Rustom Ghazala. The area branch is distinguished by its heavy security and the surveillance system that surrounds it, which gives a sense of dread about this place to any ordinary citizen who is not even an opposition member. These sensitive areas are known to be secretive to the Assad regime, as there is no information about what is inside these walls. Orient Net conveys the atmosphere of this bloody branch through interviews we conducted with former detainees, who were given a new life by leaving it.  Detention cells…the beginning of the journey of death. The lower part of Branch 227 “the basement”, according to their testimonies, is composed of cells (individual) numbered sequentially from (1 to 50). The length of each cell is 2 meters and its width is 1 metre. It contains 8 detainees at the present time. There are also rooms It is called (the collective), and each one is 3 meters long and 3 meters wide. Currently, about 6 detainees are placed in it, and the numbers are in series from (1 to 4). Outside the building there is a place roofed with tin (tutia) called “Al-Shabak” after its walls made of very strong mesh. It contains about 100 detainees. Their primary method of torture is the cold of winter and the heat of summer.  Terrorist torture methods in Assad prisons… The methods of torture in this branch vary from electricity, wind carpet, whipping with cables and sticks, ghosting for days, from hands, spraying with hot water, or immersing the head in water, and methods Others are more horrific and violate human sanctity, the consequences of which are not least death. Assistant Nimr and Assistant Basil are names that will not be erased from the memory of any detainee who emerges from this branch. They are known for their cruelty and abuse of detainees. They do not hide their longing to shed the blood of the detainees, many of whom died at the hands of these criminals and other executioners of the branch. The branch has very large fans that are used to draw air from the cells in the basements. When the jailer gets tired of torture, he relieves himself with mass torture by turning off these fans, which traps the moisture-filled air. In the cellars, the detainees feel suffocated, and some of them often die as a result of suffocation. The prisoners also suffer from lice, mosquitoes, and insects that appear in the damp cellars, taking advantage of the congestion, pus, and blood that afflicts the detainees. The jailers resort to opening each cell separately and spraying the detainees on the walls with pungent-smelling kerosene oil. , which becomes more severe when the exhaust fans are turned off.  Testimonies of former detainees in Al-Mantaqa Branch.. (Muhammad, P.), a former detainee who was released months ago, says: “They put me in a cell (two meters by one meter) with five detainees whom I do not know, and after three Days they took me out for interrogation in a (narrow corridor) three interrogators took turns (beating) me during their interrogation, ====================================== #الإمارات_العربية_المتحدة #البحرين #الكويت #السعودية #اليمن #قطر #عُمان #الأردن #سوريا #لبنان #فلسطين #العراق #تونس #الجزائر #المغرب #موريتانيا #مصر #شرق_أفريقيا #الصومال #جيبوتي #جزر_القمر #أوربا #المانيا #المانيا_السويد_النمسا_النروج_دينيمارك #الولايات_المتحدة ==================================== #المعتقليين #المعتقلين_السوريين #الحرية_لكل_المعتقليين #تبادل_أسرى #الثورة_السورية #الثورة_مستمرة #سوريا #المعتقليين_بسجون_الطاغية_بشار #مازن_حمادة #مازن_حمادة_دير_الزور
