Key Takeaways From the Digital Flight Deck
Early Adoption of 5G: Back at CES 2021, UPS Flight Forward, in partnership with Verizon and Skyward, showcased the potential of 5G for enhanced drone connectivity and control, paving the way for more robust and reliable drone delivery networks.
Expanding the Fleet – Beyond Drones: UPS isn’t stopping with drones! The videos reveal an ambitious move towards incorporating eVTOL (electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft from Beta Technologies. This expansion could significantly increase payload capacity and open up new delivery routes, particularly to smaller and mid-sized markets.
Regulatory Hurdles and Progress: Discussions about FAA regulations highlight the ongoing challenges and advancements in drone integration into the national airspace. The requirement for drone identification broadcasts, while initially a hurdle, signals progress toward a safer and more regulated drone ecosystem.
From Packages to People? (Maybe…Someday): While the focus is currently on cargo, the videos hint at the broader potential of autonomous aerial vehicles, prompting speculation about the future of passenger transport and the role companies like UPS might play.
eVTOLs, 5G, and the Sky’s the Limit: What’s Next?
The shift towards eVTOL aircraft represents a major step forward for UPS Flight Forward. The increased payload capacity and ability to operate from existing UPS facilities could dramatically improve efficiency and reduce delivery times. The early adoption of 5G connectivity also positions UPS as a leader in integrating advanced communication technology into its drone operations, setting the stage for further innovation in autonomous flight management.

This video is about an article posted by Bloomberg in regards to the FAA passing some new regulation! The FAA is now requiring drones to broadcast a ID. This is important to avoid potential harmful uses of drones but also also allows for tracking purposes. I think this is a massive step forward since this is going to be an acceptable practice and the persona is going to have to be positive! The perception is going to have to be accepted amongst people! I talk about 3 major companies Amazon, Google, and UPS who have been in the drone game for a while! Hopefully you enjoy the video and as always have a good day! 👊 FOLLOW ME:

Also: Western Global Pilots, Tamarack Touts Aiken, Metro Delivers EC145E, FRASCA On TH-73A Program One of the new aircraft you might see at Sun ‘n Fun next week is an exceptionally stout Czech LSA by the name of the Skyleader 600. Distributed by SkyleaderUSA’s Micheal Tomazin, the Rotax powered two-seater is not your average bargain-basement LSA… and boasts some pretty extensive and well-thought-out refinements, including a very slick canopy mechanism and one of the neatest trailing edge wing-steps we’ve ever seen. UPS, together with its UPS Flight Forward subsidiary, has reported plans to purchase electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft from Beta Technologies (BETA) to augment its air service for select small and mid-size markets. These aircraft will take off and land on property at UPS facilities in a quiet fashion, reducing time-in-transit, vehicle emissions, and operating costs. The BETA aircraft’s 1,400-pound cargo capacity is reportedly suited to more quickly and sustainably transport time-sensitive deliveries that would otherwise fly on small fixed-wing aircraft. The Air Force has unveiled the name and the official role of the Air Force’s newest fighter, the F-15EX Eagle ll. Lt. Gen. Duke Richardson, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics military deputy, presented the F-15EX during an unveiling and naming ceremony at Eglin Air Force Base, April 7. All this — and MORE in today’s episode of Airborne!!! Welcome back to The Vertical Space! In this episode, we’re thrilled to bring you a conversation with Jeff Luckett, President and founding member of UPS Flight Forward, a subsidiary of UPS. Since our podcast’s inception in 2021, we’ve featured numerous OEMs and service providers from both advanced air mobility and traditional aviation. However, it’s not often that we get to hear directly from the buyers and industry leaders driving the demand for these cutting-edge technologies. Today, we dive deep with one of the key figures in the industry. Jeff shares his journey leading UPS Flight Forward, where he’s been instrumental in evaluating over 850 different companies to identify those best suited to meet UPS’s unique challenges and opportunities. He reveals the criteria used to differentiate the companies that made the cut from those that didn’t, offering advice to any company looking to collaborate with major players like UPS. Throughout our conversation, we explore the crucial role of cargo-centric operations in the future of advanced air mobility. Jeff discusses why he believes the cargo market is poised to materialize more significantly in the near term compared to the passenger taxi market. He also emphasizes the importance of understanding the specific needs of organizations like UPS when marketing new technologies and services. Jeff delves into the operational aspects, explaining why what happens on the ground is just as vital as what occurs in the air. We discuss the anticipated timeline for the introduction and scaling of future aircraft within UPS, UPS’s approach to insourcing versus outsourcing, and his thoughts on integrating new aircraft into the National Airspace System (NAS). 06:56 Initial Focus on Small UAS
