Eyes in the Sky: How Drones are Revolutionizing Anti-Poaching Patrols

From vast savannas to dense jungles, wildlife faces an unrelenting threat from poachers. But a powerful new ally has emerged in this fight: the drone. These videos showcase how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), equipped with advanced technology, are transforming anti-poaching efforts, providing crucial support from the air. We’ll explore real-world examples of drone deployments, from South Africa’s Kruger National Park to Selous National Park, home to one of the world’s largest elephant populations. We’ll examine how these tools are not just providing surveillance, but also enabling rapid response and data collection, giving conservationists a decisive edge.

The Future is Airborne: Trends in Anti-Poaching Drone Technology

The videos highlight the current impact of drones, but the future holds even more potential. We can expect to see increased use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for automated detection of poachers and wildlife, longer flight times allowing for more extensive patrols, and improved sensor technology for better data collection, even in challenging conditions. Thermal imaging, for example, allows for detection even under dense canopy cover. Imagine drones equipped with AI that can automatically identify suspicious activity and alert rangers in real-time – this could be a game-changer.

Ready for Takeoff?

Drones are providing a vital tool in the fight against poaching, offering a new level of surveillance, response capability, and data collection. This technology offers hope for protecting endangered species and preserving our planet’s biodiversity. Scroll down to watch the video highlights and see these incredible tools in action!

It covers an area of 19,485 square kilometers in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. It has been divided in 22 sections with Section Rangers in charge of the management of these areas. With the ongoing Rhino poaching onslaught the majority of their time is spent on anti-poaching activities. We met up with the Letaba section ranger who is lucky enough to have a light patrol aircraft to assist with the anti-poaching work.

Saving Rhinos With Math, Drones and Satellites – Tom Snitch UMD Science
4,499 views | 16 | May 31 2013 22:20:34 (0 comments)[ Read more … ] A new weapon in the war against rhino poachers passed its first field tests in May, 2013, when unmanned aerial vehicles (aka drone) flights successfully protected rhinos at a game reserve in South Africa. The experiment, combining drones, satellite and computer programming, is the brainchild of University of Maryland Visiting Scholar Tom Snitch, who previewed the test flights in this excerpt from a talk at University of Maryland, April 11, 2013.

Tom Snitch, Ph.D., an intelligence consultant and remote sensing expert based in Bethesda, MD, is executive officer of the United Nations’ Wildlife Enforcement Monitoring Systems. Snitch organized a series of field tests beginning May 26 of unmanned aerial vehicles for anti-poaching surveillance on a private game reserve near South Africa’s Kruger National Park, the center of a deadly epidemic of rhino killings.

It was the first time unmanned aircraft were combined with satellite imagery and sophisticated mathematical modeling to catch rhino poachers. On the first day of field tests, a camera-equipped drone zeroed in on a possible attempt at poaching a rhino parent and calf. The team quickly mobilized game wardens, who detained the suspected poachers.

Poachers are killing one black rhino every 11 hours, according to the South African government. No rhinos were killed in the area, which is ground zero for rhino poaching, during the weeklong drone field trials.

The drones have many smart features provided by Solo 3dr and are a great added tool anti poaching unit patrols. Whether its a standard patrol or an emergency response situation the drones provide live HD feed to the operator. The drones can follow, lead, go back home, be sent to a location and are light enough to carry in a back pack with multiple batteries. This is a vital added tools for areas without access to helicopters, ultra lights or small planes because it adds the immediate advantage of aerial coverage while other units respond to assist.
