Today there are a lot of interesting updates from the Kursk direction. After over a month of preparations, the Russians initiated a new wave of counterattacks to recapture Malaya Lokhnya from two axes of advance, with the engagement of North Koreans. However, Ukrainians took advantage of the operational pause, enabling them to fully prepare some of their most elite units to face the Russian assaults. The Russian plan in this area was to advance four kilometers along a paved road toward Malaya Lokhnya, aiming for the town near the settlement of Pogrebki. A second route was planned to the west of Malaya Lokhnya, advancing via the road from Novoivanivka. Gaining control of Malaya Lokhnya would allow the Russians to cut off Ukrainian forces positioned north of the town and secure a large northern area, thereby extending their counteroffensive southward toward Sudzha. Some of Ukraine’s most elite and experienced units, including the 47th Mechanized Brigade, 82nd Airmobile Brigade, 17th Mechanized Brigade, and 80th Airmobile Brigade, were tasked with defending this area. Given these units’ expertise and strong leadership, they anticipated repeated large-scale Russian mechanized assaults along the paved roads to Malaya Lokhnya. Recognizing that the Russians could only attack from two directions due to the limited road access, Ukrainian commanders prepared by deploying substantial drone units and implementing remote mining along these routes to counter the assault. As anticipated, the Russians launched a major assault north of Pogrebki along the road to Malaya Lokhnya, deploying around fifteen BTRs and over 150 soldiers from the Russian 810th Marine Brigade, reportedly with North Korean troops. The assault hit landmines immediately, wiping out the first three vehicles and an entire platoon before reaching Ukrainian-controlled areas. By the time Russian forces entered Pogrebki, five of the fifteen BTRs had already been destroyed by landmines alone. Ukrainians then destroyed nine more BTRs around Pogrebki using a combination of drones, landmines, and RPGs, forcing a desperate Russian retreat. Only one BTR managed to reach the rear but was soon eliminated, marking the total destruction of the Russian column. Published footage by the Ukrainian troops from the area reveals that North Korean Type 73 machine guns were discovered scaterred around the eliminated column. This discovery implies the gradual inclusion of North Korean soldiers in Russian storming operations, as their numbers of deployed fighters are slowly growing in Kursk. Anticipating a coordinated Russian assault from Novoivanivka to align with the attack toward Pogrebki, Ukrainians deployed tanks from the 17th Mechanized Brigade to disrupt Russian force concentrations preparing for the offensive. Combat footage shows Ukrainian tanks conducting a raid on Russian positions in nearby forests. After effectively neutralizing these assault forces and eliminating the threat, the Ukrainian tanks withdrew without incurring any losses…

Today there are a lot of updates from the Siversk direction. Here, after the previous disastrous assault, the Russians decided to change their vector of attack and launched a new massive assault, this time from the northern flank of Ivano-Darivka. In spite of strong pressure from another large Russian mechanized assault, the Ukrainian fighters of the 54th Mechanized Brigade took lessons from the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade and organized a multilayered defense meant to repulse anticipated Russian assaults.

Last time I told you how Russian mechanized assault south of Ivano-Darivka resulted in heavy losses of personnel, tanks, and armored vehicles, leaving many wounded soldiers stranded in the grey zone. It seems like the Russian command figured that the main flaw in their assault was the elevated Ukrainian defensive positions above the village, rendering further attacks in this direction impractical. That is why Russian forces launched a second wave of assaults along the elevated platfrom north of Ivano-Darivka, advancing from the Lysychansk Oil Refinery, where they had amassed numerous armored vehicles for the attack. This route aimed to reduce losses by positioning Russian mechanized units on the same elevation as Ukrainian defenders, hoping to reach and capture their positions. To preserve an element of surprise, Russian forces avoided heavy artillery and aerial bombardment of the Ukrainian positions, which later proved problematic. The anticipated element of surprise failed, as Ukrainian commanders had already expected an assault along the elevated funnel. With only one dirt road leading from the main Russian positions at the Lysychansk Oil Refinery, Ukrainians were prepared to concentrate drone strikes and ATGM operators ont his narrow corridor to repel the assaults. Additionally, the narrowing down of the funnel to about one kilometer in width limited Russian maneuverability during the attack, making it easy for Ukrainian forces to detect and strike.

Combat footage shows that the Russians launched a substantial mechanized assault with eleven armored vehicles and over a hundred soldiers. However, they encountered issues before reaching Ukrainian positions, as Ukrainian forces identified and destroyed Russian tanks and BMPs with Stugna-P ATGMs. Most Russian armored losses were due to ATGM strikes—a rare occurrence, as FPV drones typically cause the majority of losses nowadays. This was likely due to the Russians’ failure to organize a coherent artillery and air support on Ukrainian positions, as alluded to by Russian sources. Standard Russian military protocols suggest that artillery should suppress most ATGM positions before an assault but due to the lack of coordination this did not happen. Russian vehicles that were out of ATGM range were targeted by FPV drones, effectively forcing the remaining troops to retreat to whatever trenches and dugouts they found nearby. Ukrainian forces then deployed Mavic drones armed with grenades to eliminate Russian infantry who continued the assault, sparing only those fleeing the area. This worsened the situation for Russian forces, as disorganized stormtroopers from the damaged BMPs—many wounded—were scattered across open fields, hiding in abandoned and scattered dugouts and trenches.

Overall, despite previous failure, the Russians once again restarted their mechanized assaults towards Ivano-Darivka, resulting in heavy losses with many disorganized and wounded survivors of the assault left in grey zone. The number of Russian troops scattered across the fields near Ivano-Darivka, including wounded, is estimated to be up to a hundred. This assault and the previous one in Siversk direction met severe media backlash in Russia by their military analysts, who criticized the commanders in the area and called for their dismissal for their inability to organize offensive operations. This led to heavy losses in tanks and BMPs by Ukrainian ATGM crews, which not only prevented the Russian mechanized units from making any territorial gains, but also reduced the chances of success of any subsequent attacks due to the deterioration of combat readiness of the broken units.

Today there are a lot of interesting updates from the Toretsk direction. Here, after months of intense fighting, the Russians halted their assaults to reorganize and rest their forces from intense fighting that brought little to negative territorial gains. This came in time as Ukrainians deployed additional reinforcements to the Toretsk area, exploting a window of opportunity for significant counterattacks on Russian flanks.

Earlier, Russian forces lost key positions in Toretsk’s central high-rise area, prompting them to halt offensive actions and shift their focus to defense. However, the Russian command struggled to establish a defensive line in time, as their troops needed to regroup and recover before resuming any operations. This situation compelled Russian command to prioritize deploying their remaining combat-ready forces to the most intense battle zones, specifically Toretsk’s central high-rises and the Zabalka district to the south. While this decision helped preserve Russian positions in these critical areas, it left gaps in the defenses of regions with lower recent activity. In Druzhba, where only skirmishes between reconnaissance groups had occurred, only a small Russian infantry group remained as most forces were concentrated in Toretsk’s key zones. Druzhba holds significant tactical value, offering Russians a potential staging ground for encircling Toretsk. The dense tree lines near an elevated railway embankment provide an effective route to bypass Ukrainian defenses and threaten a semi-encirclement from the north. Recognizing this, Ukrainian forces decided to exploit the weakened Russian defenses in Druzhba. Before launching a decisive assault, Ukrainian forces deployed a large number of specialized drones modified for bombing attacks. Combat footage shows Ukrainian drone operators using heavy hexacopters to drop TM-62 anti-tank mines on Russian positions in Druzhba. These mines, carried by hexacopters, proved highly effective for destroying fortified positions, such as houses used by Russian troops. This tactic succeeded in demolishing most structures in Druzhba, forcing the Russians to rely on improvised defenses around a few trenches. Simultaneously, Ukrainian operators used regular drones to drop smaller high-explosive grenades on exposed Russian fighters in the ruined houses, finishing off any remaining resistance. These coordinated strikes overwhelmed the unprepared Russian garrison, inflicting severe losses.

With Russian positions severely weakened, Ukrainian forces launched a night assault to retake the northern part of Druzhba. Using the cover of darkness and dense tree lines, Ukrainian stormtroopers moved undetected, making this an ideal avenue for attack. Concealed in the treelines, the Ukrainian forces surprised the outnumbered Russian defenders, who could not spot them until they entered the town. The Russians, stationed in residential houses already devastated by Ukrainian artillery and drone strikes, had no solid positions for defense. Under the intensity of the Ukrainian counterattack and with insufficient defenses, Russian forces were forced to withdraw. This allowed the Ukrainians to successfully recapture the northern part of Druzhba, creating a new axis of advance to strain Russian reserves further. Overall, the extension of Russian forces and their shortage of combat-ready troops led to the expansion of Ukrainian counterattacks and their territorial gains at the weakest points of Russian defense. These Ukrainian gains forced the Russians to deploy additional reserves to this section of the front, which is further stretching their defense thin. Reinforced pressure in tactically important Druzhba will fix a considerable number of Russian forces, which will make them lose additional positions in Toretsk, as they can’t effectively defend this entire section of the frontline.

New Ukrainian munition packs a punch through Russian tanks’ cage armour BFBS Forces News
316,066 views | 4,573 | November 11 2024 19:30:04 (291 comments)[ Read more … ] Ukrainian drone strikes have forced Russia to roll out protective cages for military vehicles engaged in its so-called Special Military Operation.

Up to now they’ve offered protection from drones, shielding personnel from the blast of an exploding munition or preventing drone-delivered anti-tank munitions, which pierce armour with explosively formed penetrators, from getting close enough.

Now those cages may have been rendered useless by a new type of munition.
