Ukraine’s playing a different kind of game in the Black Sea, and it’s not with battleships. Forget carrier groups and missile cruisers. This is about swarms of unmanned surface vessels – sea drones – hitting the Russian fleet where it hurts, and deep inside what they thought was secure territory. These aren’t Hollywood sci-fi weapons; they’re real, they’re effective, and according to these YouTube channels, they’re changing the calculus of naval power in this conflict. We’re talking about a David versus Goliath scenario, except David’s sling is loaded with high-explosives and guided by satellite. Is this the future of naval warfare? Maybe. What’s clear now is Russia’s feeling the bite.
Key Takeaways from Video Analysis:
Unprecedented Scale of Attacks (Video 1): Don’t think pinpricks. We’re seeing a sustained and increasing campaign of drone strikes, hitting targets deep inside Russia, beyond the immediate frontline. Engels airbase, oil depots, ammunition warehouses – these aren’t just symbolic targets. They’re strategic, intended to degrade Russia’s ability to project power. The term "totally unprecedented scale" might be hype, but the pattern is undeniable.
Drone Carriers and Deep Strikes (Video 2): The term "drone carrier" in the title is likely figurative – Ukraine doesn’t have actual aircraft carriers for sea drones. What it suggests is a forward deployment capability, or at least drones with significant range. Hitting "air defense deep into the Russian rear" means these drones aren’t just coastal defense weapons; they’re projecting Ukrainian power far beyond expectation and challenging Russian air superiority even inland.
Targeting Logistics and Infrastructure (Video 3 & 4): The focus isn’t just on sinking ships, though that’s happened too. These videos highlight strikes on oil depots in Smolensk, and infrastructure in Kursk. Logistics are the lifeblood of any army. Crippling fuel reserves and supply lines has a direct, cascading effect on Russian military operations, potentially slowing down offensives and complicating defense. The reported strike on the 810th Marine Brigade deployment site also shows a calculated effort to target manpower concentrations.

Magura V5 Naval Drone in Action (Videos 3, 4, 5, 6): The Magura V5 is repeatedly mentioned as the weapon of choice. It’s described as destroying a Russian Mi-8 helicopter in Video 3, and being instrumental in multiple strikes (Videos 5, 6). This isn’t some experimental platform; it’s being deployed effectively and consistently. Video 4 and 6 specifically mention the audio intercept of a pilot saying "I’m hit, going down," which, if verified, adds a chilling and visceral dimension to the drone’s impact – human cost on the Russian side.
Psychological Impact and Fleet Retreat (Video 5 & 6): Video 5 claims the attacks forced the "rest of the Russian fleet to retreat from the Ukrainian coast." This is a significant claim. Even if exaggerated, it points to a strategic effect beyond just destroyed hardware. If Russian ships are being forced further out to sea, it degrades their ability to project power, conduct landings, or effectively support ground operations. The “chilling” pilot intercept mentioned in Video 6 further underscores the psychological impact these drones are having. Fear is a weapon too.
Historical Firsts – Helicopter Downed by Naval Drone (Videos 4, 5, 6): Multiple videos emphasize the novelty of a naval drone downing a helicopter. This isn’t just about the kill count. It’s about demonstrating a new capability and exploiting a perceived weakness. Helicopters operating near the coast, once considered relatively safe from naval threats, are now vulnerable. This changes operational doctrines.
Breaking the Mold: Asymmetric Naval Warfare
What we’re seeing isn’t a traditional naval battle. Ukraine doesn’t have a navy to go toe-to-toe with the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Instead, they’ve innovated, weaponizing readily available technology – drones – to create a fundamentally asymmetric threat. It’s cheap, it’s adaptable, and it’s proving surprisingly effective.
Think about it. A relatively inexpensive drone can take out a multi-million dollar helicopter, or damage a crucial fuel depot. The cost exchange ratio is heavily in Ukraine’s favor. This forces Russia to expend resources defending against these swarms – resources they could be using elsewhere. It’s a form of economic attrition, as much as military.

The attacks also demonstrate a level of strategic thinking. These aren’t random strikes. Targeting airbases, fuel depots, and logistical hubs suggests a calculated campaign to degrade Russia’s overall military capacity, not just score tactical victories. It’s about making the war harder, more expensive, and less sustainable for the Russians.

Silicon Bites #81 – Ukrainian Drones Pound Russian Infrastructure on a Totally Unprecedented ScaleSilicon Curtain57,672 views | 3,866 | January 15 2025 20:09:14 (165 comments)[ Read more … ]
Edition No81 | 15-01-2025 – Ukraine has steadily been increasing its strikes against targets deep within Russia since the conclusion of the US election. But before we get into the details of the latest strikes over the weekend, let’s review how this started last week with the huge, ‘multi-day’ targeting of Russia’s Engels airbase infrastructure. ———-
At relatively short notice, we’re organising two events in Ukraine in the last week of January. Lviv (part 2) and Kyiv. The event we ran in August 2023 was a huge success, and had a great impact. Now our aim is even more ambitious. Two cities. Two events. Multiple panels consisting of the best experts, and all filmed in high definition for the channel.
https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras
But it costs. Last time the overall cost was 3,500 for Live in Lviv, and we covered 80% of this through ticket sales. This time the costs are higher, and there’s less opportunity to sell tickets at the available venues and studios, so I’m creating a campaign to raise 5,000 to make this trip a reality. We also have a much more ambitious programme to film interviews around Kyiv and Lviv for the channel. This project will have an impact, so please help if you can.
Ukraine has targeted Russia’s Engels airbase and associated infrastructure in ‘multi-day, comprehensive operation’. This was reported by Kyiv’s 14th Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Regiment reported on Jan. 14. This unit is part of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces; they claimed the attacks were intended to “reduce the enemy’s strategic aviation capabilities”.
It’s also been reported, and footage on social media seems to attest to this, that they struck aviation fuel tanks at the Kristal oil plant used to supply Russian long-range bomber aircraft.
“We are doing our best to ensure that Engels fire crews, who have just put out the flames after the previous attack, are not left without work in the face of the increasingly difficult economic situation in Russia.” The Ukrainian unit is quoted as saying.
The attack had also seemed to have targeted ammunition warehouses at the airbase which store cruise missiles and glide bombs. Several explosions were heard in the area, according to local reports from Russian Telegram channels. ———-

Ukraine’s “Magura” missile naval drones have destroyed two Russian helicopters and damaged another one in the Black Sea. The operation marked the first case of Russian Mi-8 helicopters being hit by Ukrainian drones in the Black Sea.
As a result of the successful operation by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense in the Black Sea, two Russian Mi-8 helicopters were destroyed near the Russian-annexed Crimea Peninsula on December 31, 2024, with the use of Magura V5 naval drones equipped with missiles. The attack was carried out by fighters of the special unit “Group 13”. Rockets P-73 “SeeDragon” successfully destroyed the Russian Mi-8 helicopter. Moreover, the strikes forced the rest of the Russian fleet to retreat from the Ukrainian coast.
Being in operation since 2023 and capable of covering a distance of more than 800 kilometers, Magura drone has helped Ukraine push back against Russia’s Black Sea Fleet by striking dozens of ships last year.
Ukraine previously destroyed several notable Russian ships with Magura drones, including a landing ship Caesar Kunikov, a Sergei Kotov patrol ship, high-speed Serna and Akula landing crafts, and a Tarantul-class Ivanovets missile corvette. http://youtube.com/kanal13az/join – click here and support Kanal13 monthly for distributing more videos and independent journalism

For the first time in history, a Ukrainian naval drone has successfully taken down a Russian Mi-8 helicopter near Crimea’s Cape Tarkhankut. The dramatic attack, carried out by a Magura V5 maritime drone, was confirmed by Ukraine’s GUR spy agency. A chilling radio intercept captured the pilot’s realization: “There was an explosion—I’m hit, going down!”
These advanced naval drones are reshaping the battlefield, crippling Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and forcing their warships to retreat. Is this the future of naval warfare? Stay updated as Ukraine continues to innovate in the fight for freedom.
