Shadows in the East: Ukraine’s Long-Range Drones Strike Deep into Russia’s War Machine

The air hangs thick with the scent of burning metal and distant explosions, even miles from the front lines. It’s a smell that’s becoming increasingly familiar across the Russian borderlands, a grim testament to the evolving nature of this brutal conflict. For months, the world has watched as Ukraine, outgunned and outnumbered in conventional weaponry, has turned to the shadows, deploying a new kind of arsenal: long-range drones. These aren’t battlefield nuisances; they are precision instruments designed to cripple the sinews of Russia’s war machine, striking deep into its industrial heartlands and logistical arteries. From the fiery inferno of oil refineries to the silent shutdown of steel mills, these unmanned aerial vehicles are rewriting the rules of engagement, forcing Moscow to confront a threat it seemingly underestimated. The whispers of these attacks are growing louder, amplified by shaky phone camera footage and terse military communiqués. But what is the true impact of Ukraine’s drone offensive? And what does it mean for the future of this war?

Key Insights from the Drone War’s Front Lines

Beyond the Horizon: The Future of Drone Warfare Deep Inside Russia

The smoke rising from Russian industrial sites is more than just collateral damage; it’s a signal fire illuminating a new phase of this conflict. Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign is not just a tactical annoyance for Moscow; it’s a strategic challenge that demands a response. We are witnessing the weaponization of distance, where relatively inexpensive unmanned systems are capable of reaching across vast territories to inflict significant economic and military pain. This is asymmetric warfare in its starkest form – a David and Goliath scenario played out in the digital age, where ingenuity and precision are leveraged to overcome brute force.

The future likely holds an intensification of this drone war. Russia will undoubtedly seek to bolster its air defenses and retaliate with its own drone and missile strikes. However, the genie is out of the bottle. The vulnerability of critical infrastructure to long-range drone attacks is now undeniable, and both sides will continue to refine their tactics and technologies. The chilling reality is that the shadows in the east are only going to deepen, and the hum of unseen engines overhead will become the soundtrack of a new, protracted phase of this devastating war.

Drone warfare innovations have become a defining feature of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war. Unmanned vehicles of various sizes, operating in the air, on land, and at sea, play a central role, with technology advancing rapidly from both sides. Additionally, many Ukrainian allies develop and improve their aerial drones, testing them on the Ukrainian battlefields. Recently, several Ukrainian sources reported that Ukraine’s Armed Forces have successfully integrated full-size FAB-250 bombs into their drone warfare operations, conducting precision strikes on Russian targets in Bryansk Oblast. According to the report by the Ukrainian air defense forces-linked Telegram channel, Nikolaevsky Vanyok, 14th Separate UAV Regiment of the Ukrainian Army’s Unmanned Systems Forces has successfully employed UAVs carrying 250 kg aerial bombs. Defense Express notes that the photo evidence, shared by the Telegram channel, includes an image showing the FAB-250M-54 high-explosive aerial bomb mounted on a UAV alongside a 120 mm mortar shell, demonstrating the scale of these weapons. The classified unmanned aircraft are designed for multiple missions, returning to base after payload delivery for rearmament and redeployment. Militarnyi says that in the early hours of 30 January, the 14th Regiment deployed at least one modified aircraft to bomb the Novozybkov oil pumping station on the Druzhba pipeline in Russia’s Bryansk Oblast. The aircraft was armed with a 250 kg FAB-250 M54 bomb and two smaller munitions, “visually resembling artillery shells.” The aircraft’s return to Ukraine remained unclear, while as of 13:00, Russian media had not published any images of downed aircraft, Militarnyi added. According to Defense Express, Russian forces are now aware of Ukraine’s capability to deploy full-size FAB bombs via drones. It is unclear what aircraft now carry the mass-produced FAB-250 aerial bombs. Earlier, photos surfaced from April 2024 of Ukrainian UAVs that crashed in Russia, identified by Militarnyi as E-300 SkyRanger light aircraft. It was modified into a drone with a bomb-carrying pylon and an onboard remote control electro-optical system, possibly also used for target acquisition, and precision bombing. Defense Express noted that the modified SkyRangers carried a lighter aerial bomb, FAB-100. The targeted oil pumping station was located less than 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, while previous wreckage was found over 1,000 kilometers away, according to Militarnyi. Defense Express says the successful deployment of FAB-250 bombs indicates either new aircraft introduction or Skyranger UAV payload capacity enhancement. In November, videos from Russia’s Dagestan showed other light aircraft, A-22 Foxbat, also made into a UAV. However, due to their long range, these UAVs were on a one-way mission, and it remains unclear whether they can drop the bomb and return to base. http://youtube.com/kanal13az/join – click here and support Kanal13 monthly for distributing more videos and independent journalism

The production of long-range drones, which Ukraine uses to carry out most of its strikes on Russian territory, is almost independent of assistance from the United States, Ukrainian military observer Denis Popovich told Radio NV.

“This is what was developed and is used by us. The issue of air defense depends on American supplies. The use of HIMARS depends on American supplies. Everything that flies out of HIMARS. Satellite reconnaissance may depend on American supplies. And, accordingly, satellite reconnaissance may have an impact on the operation of long-range drones. And the production of these drones itself does not depend on American suppliers,” Popovich explained.

Recently, Bloomberg journalists reported that US President Donald Trump had stopped all American aid to Ukraine . This includes weapons that had already been sent but had not yet been delivered to Ukraine. The official said Trump had instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to suspend shipments of all U.S. military equipment that is not currently in Ukraine, including weapons already being transported by plane or ship or waiting in transit zones in Poland.

The US decision to stop aid to Ukraine will primarily affect the supply of air defense missiles and artillery ammunition, Voice of America journalist Ostap Yarish wrote on the social network X .

In particular, a senior Trump administration official confirmed to the publication that the US is pausing all military aid to Ukraine.

“It appears that the pause affects all planned but not yet completed deliveries – in particular under the USAI long-term support program. If you look at the latest announcements from the Biden administration, here we are primarily talking about air defense missiles, HIMARS ammunition and artillery,” Yarish writes.

He also recalled that the last time Donald Trump announced a suspension of arms supplies to Ukraine in 2019, it led to Democrats in the House of Representatives impeaching him, although the Senate later acquitted him.

As American officials and experts note, Ukraine will not feel the consequences of the termination of American aid immediately. According to various opinions, several weeks, and perhaps even months, will pass.

However, the effect of such a decision will be “devastating” and will affect Ukraine’s military power even years later. http://youtube.com/kanal13az/join – click here and support Kanal13 monthly for distributing more videos and independent journalism

Russian oil refineries are going up in flames as Ukraine unleashes relentless waves of drone strikes deep into enemy territory. With 10% of Russia’s refining capacity already offline and more targets inside, these attacks are beginning to impact the Russian economy, according to Euromaidan Press media outlet.

The most significant Ukrainian strike took place in Crimea, where Ukrainians launched over 100 drones against Russian military airfields and air defense systems.

To wear out Russian air defenses, Ukrainians deployed decoy drones, overloading Russian crews with targets and allowing the real drones to slip through. Then, the Ukrainians destroyed a Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense system and a Buk-M1 radar, creating a gap wide enough for the Ukrainians to devastate Russian military airfields. Ukrainians also deployed naval drones equipped with anti-air missiles and FPV drones to strike targets along the coast and deny Russian aviation the ability to fly over the Black Sea to intercept incoming strikes.

Euromaidan Press says that Russians used helicopters and jets to help track and take down Ukrainian drones. With these airfields heavily bombed and Russians unable to use their aviation, Russian air defense was weakened—especially over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, where Russian helicopters are most often deployed. This enabled the Ukrainians to launch additional drone strikes toward Russian oil refineries located in Krasnodar Krai and the southern Rostov Oblast, flying over the Crimean Peninsula and surrounding seas with close to 80 long-range strike drones.

According to Euromaidan Press, in Tuapse, civilian reports mentioned hearing over 40 explosions near the seaport and oil refinery in the city. Over the past weeks, Ukrainians have launched several more devastating drone strikes on Russian oil refineries and supporting infrastructure. Notably, Ukrainians hit a major oil refinery and depot in Krasnodar Krai, right under the nose of the main base of the Russian 90th Air Defense Brigade, even destroying several air defense systems during this strike. In Volgograd Oblast, Ukrainians struck the main oil refinery—which refines over 14 million tons of oil per year—several times over the course of many days, along with the Astrakhan gas processing plant in the area. Ukrainians launched strikes far beyond Volgograd Oblast, targeting the Saratov oil refinery, which processes over seven million tons of oil annually. After Saratov, the Ukrainians struck the Ilsky oil refinery to the south, with over six million tons of oil annually, and the Syzran oil refinery near Samara, with almost nine million tons of oil. Ukrainians also targeted Tula’s oil refinery and the massive oil storage facilities there. In the matter of long-range drones, the Russian side still has an advantage in quantity and range. At the same time, Ukrainian drones achieve greater effectiveness in attacks on targets, aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko said on air at the telethon.

“So far, the Russian side has the advantage; they launch hundreds of their long-range drones. In addition, unfortunately, Russian drones have a greater range and, in most cases, have a much larger warhead. But our drones choose the most vulnerable Russian targets and thus achieve greater effectiveness,” he explained.

The expert noted that it is necessary to pay attention to an important point: how many of the launched Russian drones hit their targets.

“Today it is about half a percent – one drone out of 177. It was about one and a half percent a few days ago. That is, out of 200 launched drones, about three hit their targets,” he emphasized.

Romanenko added that the overall effectiveness of the Ukrainian side’s strikes is much higher. And this is despite the fact that not hundreds of long-range drones are launched at targets on enemy territory – we are talking about dozens.

“Our overall efficiency is much higher. With each launch, for example, at an oil refinery, there are serious damages to objects that disable the most vulnerable elements of the oil refining process. Each strike generally disables airfields for some time, even if there are no critical hits,” the guest of the broadcast noted.

Also, according to the aviation expert, there is nothing fundamentally new in the strategy and tactics of Russian attacks with attack drones on civilian cities in Ukraine. The only changes are the mass character and the increase in the number of Russian imitators, which are intended to complicate the work of the Ukrainian air defense in destroying enemy attack drones.

“But now there are methods that allow us to cut off imitation drones. For example, selection by speed, because the “Parodias” and “Gerberas” have a significantly lower speed than the attack “Shaheds”. In this way, we can cut off drones that will be called location-lost from those that pose a real danger. I would like to emphasize once again that for almost the entire month of February, the percentage of destroyed Russian attack drones did not fall below 95%. Almost everything is destroyed,” Romanenko emphasized.

In his opinion, massive raids by enemy UAVs are a temporary phenomenon, since the total production capacity of the two Russian factories that “churn out” these “Shaheds” does not exceed 1,200-1,400 drones per month.

“The Russians simply do not have the capacity to launch an average of 200 drones daily or every other day,” he added. http://youtube.com/kanal13az/join – click here and support Kanal13 monthly for distributing more videos and independent journalism
