Unlocking History: Drone-Generated 3D Models for Heritage Preservation
From crumbling ruins to majestic battleships, preserving our history is a race against time. These featured videos showcase the incredible power of drones to create accurate and detailed 3D models of historical sites and structures. Weβll explore the process of photogrammetry, using software like 3DF Zephyr, and how even consumer-grade drones can be transformed into powerful 3D scanning tools. This technology is revolutionizing how we document, study, and share our heritage, offering a unique blend of accessibility and precision. Join us as we delve into the exciting possibilities of drone-powered 3D modeling.
Key Insights for Drone-Based 3D Modeling
Democratization of 3D Scanning: Any drone can become a 3D scanner using photogrammetry, opening up exciting possibilities for hobbyists, historians, and professionals alike. Planning your flight path meticulously is crucial for capturing the complete and overlapping images necessary for accurate model generation. Resources like Waypoint Map can assist with flight planning.
Preserving Maritime History: Drones allow for detailed documentation of large vessels like the USS Texas Battleship, especially while in drydock, creating invaluable records and enabling virtual tours for a wider audience.
Software Comparison: Specialized software solutions like Luma AI and 3DPresso process video footage to create 3D models, raising questions about the efficiency and quality differences between such platforms. Understanding the optimal use case for each platform, from gaming assets to 3D printing, becomes paramount for professional applications. Even 360 cameras can be utilized as innovative video scanning tools.
Professional-Grade Applications: Enterprise-level drones like the DJI M350 RTK, paired with software like DJI Terra, enable the efficient creation of highly detailed 3D models of complex structures, exemplified by the Yellow Crane Tower case study. This demonstrates the power of integrated solutions for large-scale projects.
Enhancing 3D Model Quality: Optimizing your 3D models, even with imperfect source data, requires mastering techniques to address common photogrammetry issues. Dedicated courses, some of which are freely available online, can help refine your post-processing skills for a more polished final product.
The Future is Now: Advanced Imaging and Accessibility
The ongoing development of software and hardware is continuously pushing the boundaries of whatβs possible with drone-generated 3D models. We can expect increasingly accessible tools and more streamlined workflows, empowering more people to participate in digital preservation efforts. As image quality improves and processing power increases, the level of detail and realism achievable in these models will only continue to rise, creating even more immersive and informative experiences.

In this video, you will learn how to create a 3D model with the aid of QGIS, using an elevation dataset.
The elevation data are given as a tabular dataset which consists of x, y coordinates and the elevation values as a CSV file, and QGIS is used to import the data as a point dataset, and then spatial interpolation methods (spline) are used to create a raster out of it, for the entire extent of the point dataset.
Afterwards, qgis2threejs plugin of QGIS is used to visualise the raster in a 3D manner.
