The leader of the Islamist group that entered Aleppo has been killed in a Russian airstrike, Arab media reported. Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air force targeted Syrian rebels on Dec. 1 in support of the Syrian government’s army, according to Russian news agencies. Ahmed Hussein al-Shar’a, aka Abu Mohammad al-Julani, is wanted by the US as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, with a $10 million bounty on his head. His group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly known as the Nusra Front, is designated a terrorist group by the US, Russia, Turkey, and others. Al-Julani has been the group’s political and military leader since its formation.

The rapid advance of Syrian rebels in Syria is causing serious concern among Russian propagandists. After the capture of the city of Aleppo by opponents of the dictatorial regime of Assad, Z-channels began writing about the threat to the Russian naval base in Tartus. One of the Russian channels writes that the rapid advance of the rebels, the “direct participation of the Turkish military” and the poor performance of Assad’s troops, who are fleeing their positions under the pressure of the armed opposition, calls into question the existence of a Russian naval base in Tartus.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has returned to Aleppo 10 years after it was driven out of the city by Assad and his allies. The Syrian dictator, amid the fall of the city, urgently left for Moscow to ask for help. ” Russia, one of Assad’s key allies, has promised him additional military aid to repel the rebel advance… New weapons will begin arriving within the next 72 hours ,” the article says. Meanwhile, Assad’s troops have been ordered to “safely retreat” from Aleppo. The commander of one of the rebel brigades that carried out the breakthrough, Mustafa Abdul Jaber, explained such a rapid breakthrough by the weakening of Iran. Tehran, having received very painful blows from Israel, was unable to effectively support Assad. Another ally of the regime, Moscow, which is bogged down in a war of attrition in Ukraine, is also having problems. The rebels said their offensive was in response to increased Russian and Syrian air strikes on their areas in Idlib in recent weeks. Sources close to Turkish intelligence said Ankara had given the green light to the offensive. Officially, however, Turkey has maintained a neutral stance and called for de-escalation.
