Israeli jets struck an oil depot at al-Hudaydah Port in Yemen on Saturday sparking a large fire that officials said could be seen across the Middle East.
The strike on Saturday afternoon came after Houthi rebels launched a drone attack at Israel killing one civilian and wounding eight others.
Footage showed the port of Hudaydah in flames as well as long lines at gas stations in Yemen’s capital of Sana’a.
A Houthi spokesman confirmed that an oil storage facility and electrical installations were hit. Although he admitted there were casualties he did not confirm how many.
Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defence minister, said the fire “is seen across the Middle East and the significance is clear”.

READ MORE: Erdogan called on Russia Saturday to get out of Turkey’s way in Syria and allow its forces to deal with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Erdogan said Turkey had retaliated against Syrian forces for killing 34 of its soldiers this week in the northwestern province of Idlib.
The escalating tensions between Turkey and Russia, who back opposing forces in the Syria conflict, after an airstrike killed the Turkish troops sparked fears of a broader war and a new migration crisis for Europe.
Around 13,000 migrants have gathered along the Turkish-Greek border, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said as several thousand migrants were in skirmishes with Greek police firing tear gas across the frontier.
Syrian state media (SANA) said Sunday that Turkish forces targeted two Syrian planes over the Idlib region.
SANA reported that the pilots are safe.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, said the two jets went down over regime-held territory, likely after being targeted by Turkish F-16 planes. (VOA/AP/AFP)

“Many families were forced to flee on foot in the middle of winter, with temperatures at night reaching minus 10 degrees,” she said. “Over the past nine years of conflict, people across northwest Syria have already been displaced multiple times and rely heavily on humanitarian assistance.”

Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Sunday broadcast footage they said was of a major attack into Saudi Arabia that killed or wounded 500 soldiers with thousands of others surrendering.
Yahya Saree, a Houthi military spokesman, described an ambush on the Saudi forces that then developed into an “all-out” cross-border offensive that trapped the troops inside Saudi Arabia.
“More than 200 were killed in dozens of [missile and drone] strikes while trying to escape or surrender,” Saree said.
The fighting took place in the southern region of Najran with video images aired showing armoured vehicles hit by blasts and surrendering soldiers.
