Here, Russians continued the 3rd wave of their counteroffensive, trying to overcome Ukrainian defenses with a new tactical approach. Despite disastrous results, Russian commanders stubbornly refused to change their tactics, leading to many Russian marines finding a watery grave.
The main Russian goal in this stage of their counteroffensive is to penetrate the Ukrainian defenses in a pincer maneuver, and take the northern front of the Ukrainian incursion into a pocket. Recently, Russians decided to double down on their assaults on Novoivanovka, assuming they were on the brink of collapsing Ukrainian lines. This time, Russians tried to use a different tactic, assaulting the settlement head-on from the east to distract Ukrainians, while launching a flanking attack from the south. A small river runs south of Novoivanovka, with only one bridge that Russians must cross to enter the town from the south. Unfortunately for Russians, Ukrainians were prepared, holding an all-round defense in the settlement, and the Russian flanking attacks being exposed to more Ukrainian fire from the south as they tried to cross the river.
Ukrainians shared geolocated footage of one of these assaults, as the Russian column started hitting landmines as soon as they left the town of Liubimovka. As they crossed into the southern fields, many Russian vehicles were hit and caught fire. At the same time, the infantry prematurely dismounted in a desperate attempt to reach the safety of the forest. Only one of the six Russian vehicles managed to enter the settlement in the end, but was ambushed and disabled by a Ukrainian anti-tank weapon, whereafter Ukrainians quickly finished off the scattered Russian infantry.
Despite the Russian attack failing, and Ukrainians now knowing the Russian plan of attack, Russian commanders ordered another five waves of mechanized assaults in the same way as before. Expectedly, these attacks ended even worse for Russian forces, as Ukrainians now knew the exact Russian plan of attack, along with Russians not changing their tactics in the slightest. Ukrainians continued to share geolocated footage of them repulsing the Russian frontal and flanking assaults, showing many burning Russian armored personnel carriers failing to cross the river. Released footage of the aftermath of the Russian assaults at the river crossing shows that the Russian marines of the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade suffered heavy casualties in their attempted flanking maneuver. The footage grimly shows the river banks and the reeds being littered with dead Russian soldiers and destroyed armored vehicles. Ukrainian soldiers active in the region state that the activity of Russian forces in the Kursk direction remains steady. They add that Russians regularly deploy armored vehicles along their main attack vectors, which get destroyed before they can achieve any significant breakthrough. The Institute for the Study of War reports that the Russian military frequently transfers new reserves to the Kursk region to replace high personnel and equipment losses.
Overall, Ukrainian units have even described their defensive situation as stable, despite defending against the 3rd wave of the Russian counteroffensive and coming under near-constant Russian assault. Thanks to frequent rotations, Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk region remain well-rested and more able to leverage their superior training and equipment to achieve tactical victories on the battlefield. This allows Ukrainians to quickly adapt to the constantly changing situation, and effectively respond to new Russian tactics. As Russian losses rapidly mount and their progress stalls, Russians are quickly depleting their more elite assault units, further diminishing their prospects of breaking through Ukrainian lines.

Today there are a lot of updates from the Kursk direction. Here, the Ukrainians launched an incursion into the Russian territories and managed a deep breakthrough far beyond Russian defenses. To put this offensive into perspective, in just three days of active operations, Ukrainians gained more territory in Kursk than Russians in three months in Kharkiv, and in this video I will tell you exactly how that happened. The initial goal of the Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance force was to swiftly penetrate deep beyond the Russian border using highly mobile units reinforced with armor. These actions were intended to pave the way for the main Ukrainian offensive forces. The tactic was the following: Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance units scout the area for Russian positions, analyzing the terrain, and systematically neutralizing Russian border defenses. Afterward, the main force move into the secured territories to consolidate control. The initial assault force was composed of three hundred Ukrainian fighters, supported by eleven tanks and twenty armored vehicles. This force included elite elements from the Eighty-eight and Eighty-second Air Assault Brigades, some of the most formidable units in the Ukrainian army. The primary Ukrainian assault group stationed in the village of Yunakivka was tasked with eliminating Russian positions at the Sudzha border crossing. Success in this attack would allow Ukrainian forces to utilize the P-Two-Thousand highway to advance toward the regional center, the town of Sudzha. Meanwhile, another assault group positioned in the village of Novenke, north of Yunakivka, was assigned to seize control of the border villages of Sverdlikovo and Nikolayevo Darina, securing the northern flank of the advance. Securing control of these two villages would allow the assault force to dominate the highway at Sverdlikovo, effectively cutting off Russian reinforcements from the nearby town of Korenevo. A third group, also stationed at Yunakivka, was tasked with capturing the villages of Guyevo and Kurilovka to protect the southern flank from potential Russian counterattacks. The offensive began with Ukrainian shelling of the Russian garrison at the Sudzha border crossing. Combat footage from the area shows significant damage to the crossing, with Russian troops being suppressed and forced to take cover in the buildings. Additionally, the Russians abandoned a tank at the crossing, as most of their soldiers were caught off guard by the intensity of the Ukrainian artillery barrage. An attempt by Russian forces to deploy two additional old T-Sixty-Two-M tanks from the town of Sudzha ended in failure, as both were quickly destroyed on the road. In response, the Russian command deployed a Mi-Twenty-Eight and a Ka-Fifty-Two attack helicopters to counter the Ukrainian assault groups. However, the Russian pilots, lacking an accurate understanding of the scale of the Ukrainian offensive and the evolving situation, were unable to effectively engage the enemy. Both helicopters were eventually shot down. In a video released by Ukrainian drone operators, one can see the Mi-Twenty-Eight being hit and brought down by an FPV drone, a tactic previously unseen in the war. As their positions at the checkpoint were unsustainable, losses too heavy, and reinforcements destroyed, over forty surviving Russian soldiers at Sudzha checkpoint surrendered to Ukrainian assault groups. Surviving Russian soldiers got taken into captivity, and it is estimated that a total of three hundred Russians surrendered in the Kursk direction. The Russian forces were small and dispersed along the border, making it easy for the Ukrainians to isolate and eliminate them, given that reinforcements were far away. As the Ukrainian spearhead successfully destroyed the main Russian formations at the border, the main Ukrainian force took advantage of this success, advancing over ten kilometers across the front toward Sudzha and its flanks. Today, the biggest updates come from the Kursk direction.
Here, after a series of disastrous defeats, Russian forces decided to change their tactics and tried a new assault on the main Ukrainian stronghold. But even more importantly, new footage revealed how North Korean soldiers are undergoing active integration into Russian formations and getting ready for large-scale combat operations in the region.
The main Russian goal continues to be to cut off Ukrainian forces in the northern part of the salient with a pincer maneuver toward Malaya Loknya. But after a disastrous failed assault through the settlements left many Russian soldiers encircled, and false reports only worsened the situation, Russians were forced to change their tactics.
If we look at the topographic map, we can see that Malaya Loknya sits on a hill chain with a hardened road running along it. In a change of tactics, instead of advancing through the settlements in the lowlands, Russians are now trying to advance over the hill chain to reach their goal of capturing Malaya Loknya. Besides being able to attack Ukrainian positions from the same height, by taking up positions in the tree line along the road, Russians would simultaneously gain fire control over the settlements in the lowlands.
Russians launched several waves of assaults along this road, while Ukrainians had set up to repulse them most effectively. Geolocated footage shows how Russian vehicles sped down the road but continuously blew up on Ukrainian anti-tank mines. The footage also shows how Russians did not use purely mechanized forces in their assaults, but unarmored trucks filled with infantry. This indicates that Russians had not yet fixed their communication issues, and expected the road to be already secured by previous assaults. After Ukrainian artillery had opened fire, shrapnel tore through the unarmored personnel carriers, as the soldiers and trucks scattered in all directions to get out of the Ukrainian kill zone as fast as possible.
Even though Ukrainian drones were able to hunt down many of the remaining Russian soldiers, Ukrainians could not prevent small groups of them from making it to dugouts and trenches in the surrounding trees. This is a typical Russian tactic, where Russian infantry scatters in all directions to take shelter, establishing new positions to inch the frontline forward, even after a failed assault. Ukrainians understood this and sent in special forces groups to finish off the remaining soldiers or take them captive. As the Russian soldiers often do not have the supplies or training necessary to fight off the well-trained and battle-hardened Special Forces operators successfully, many Russians simply surrender shortly after being taken under fire.
Interestingly, one captured Russian soldier revealed that there was a North Korean military encampment in the region, just 25 kilometers or 15 and a half miles from Ukrainian lines. He also added that that they were instructed not to disclose any information on North Korean fighters, and to only mention Buryats, which are an Asian-Mongolian ethnic group within eastern Russian territories, to hide North Korean involvement as much as possible. Later, another Russian soldier leaked a video showing how they were teaching North Korean soldiers Russian phrases. This indicates that North Koreans are preparing to engage in active frontline combat operations soon, and are trying to ensure that they will be able to work together when conducting assaults in the future.
Overall, Russian forces try to inch themselves forward with every attack, as even after a failed assault, Ukrainians cannot prevent some Russian soldiers from taking up new positions. Ukrainians maintain an active defense by clearing the exhausted Russian soldiers, while gaining valuable intel on Russian and North Korean operations. Russians are losing more and more of their better-trained soldiers with every failed assault, and likely do not have enough of them in reserve to accomplish their goals on their own. Likely, the North Korean soldiers will be sent forward as a first wave of assault, to deplete Ukrainian supplies, expose firing positions, and trigger hidden land mines and ambushes. The idea being that after this, Russian troops can come in to clean up the remaining Ukrainian positions, a Russian cannon fodder tactic that was widely applied to Russian convict recruits, leading to countless losses of troops.

Putin’s forces are believed to be losing hundreds of troops a day, with Ukrainian estimates going as high as 1,200 to 1,500, so the more than 10,000 troops South Korea believes are in Russia would last two weeks or so at that rate. The troops are already under fire, being shelled in the Russian border region of Kursk, according to Kyiv. That is the area where Ukrainian troops have held territory, having started a daring raid in August. North Korean soldiers are now in place, mainly in locations around Russia’s Kursk region where Ukrainian forces have captured some Russian territory, and that the troops have already suffered combat casualties.
“North Korean mothers who sent their children to Russia must feel unimaginable pain,” said Kim Jeong-ah, a North Korean defector and former first lieutenant in the North Korean People’s Army who spoke to VOA Korean.
“It drives you crazy; how else can you express that feeling?” said Kim, herself a mother who now runs a nonprofit in Seoul that promotes women’s rights in North Korea. “They cannot even cry as hard as you want at home, because there’s no soundproof walls between houses.”
Kim, who escaped North Korea in 2009, said, “The families of those North Korean soldiers in Russia must be suffering without being able to express their grievances due to pressure from the North Korean regime.”
It is widely believed that the Kim Jong Un regime mobilized its elite “Storm Corps” special forces to support Russia.
Lee Hyun Seung, a former soldier in the Storm Corps unit and an escapee who now lives in the U.S., told VOA Korean that “the North Korean regime does not inform families of overseas deployments, unit locations or personal safety issues,” for fear of leaking military secrets.
Lee suggested that news of the deployment is likely already spreading by word of mouth among residents, and that “there will certainly be internal opposition among residents to this clear violation of human rights — deploying the troops without notice to the families.”
“Rumors will spread quickly, and if the families who were not aware of the deployment find out their sons were sacrificed, this will be a huge blow to the regime.”
In a recent talk hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Tae Young-ho, former North Korean diplomat who served in South Korea’s National Assembly after his defection, said although Pyongyang is keeping the deployment secret, North Korean troop fatalities will be hard to keep from public view.

Here, in a bold and strategic maneuver, Ukrainian forces have successfully encircled several key settlements, effectively isolating substantial Russian troop formations and setting the stage for intense clashes. As the encirclement tightens, the trapped Russian forces face the prospect of imminent Ukrainian offensives, some of which have already resulted in devastating losses for the Russians.
Recently, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky revealed a map during a televised session of the Ukrainian Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, showcasing the current front line in Kursk Oblast. Notably, Syrsky’s map substantiated earlier speculations, highlighting several “cauldrons” where Russian troops are effectively surrounded and cut off from their supply lines.
One of the most notorious “cauldrons” has formed north of Sudzha, near Malaya Loknya, marking a significant tactical victory for Ukrainian forces. In the early stages of the Kursk incursion, Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance units executed a deep penetration into Russian-held territory, advancing over 15 kilometers north of Malaya Loknya along the road to Lgov. This swift and decisive maneuver was crucial in encircling the Russian forces. The unexpected speed and depth of the Ukrainian advance caught the Russian troops off guard, leading to the entrapment of a substantial number of Russian units in Malaya Loknya at the very outset of the offensive, paving the way for their prolonged isolation.
Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups effectively employed ambush tactics along key routes, preventing Russian forces from regrouping or escaping the area. These strategic actions were crucial in maintaining the isolation of the encircled Russian units, cutting off any potential reinforcements or escape routes. As a result of this sustained isolation, most of the trapped Russian forces were either annihilated in combat or forced to surrender. However, unlike other encircled Russian troops, those in Malaya Loknya have managed to hold out much longer. Their prolonged resistance can be attributed to their use of the former women’s penal colony as a fortified stronghold. The prison complex’s robust infrastructure has provided significant defensive advantages, enabling these forces to resist far longer than others in similar situations.
Recent reconnaissance data confirms that Ukrainian forces have successfully secured critical terrain features and transportation routes in all directions surrounding Malaya Loknya. This thorough control of the flanks has established a multi-layered defense system, effectively stifling any potential Russian breakout attempts.
Recently published geolocated images reveal intense Ukrainian assaults on the surrounded Russian forces in the area. The images capture the prison pavilions in the background while a German-made BMP “Marder” infantry fighting vehicle from the 95th Air Assault Brigade unleashes a powerful attack on two auxiliary buildings adjacent to the prison fences. The Marder’s 20-millimeter autocannon obliterates these structures, reducing them to ashes. Another video, also filmed near the prison, shows Marder vehicles utterly destroying several nearby buildings, further tightening the noose around the beleaguered Russian troops. However, this was only the beginning. Ukrainian forces are now establishing a second, potentially even more devastating, cauldron just twelve kilometers east of the first one. Russian military analysts report that Ukrainian troops are encircling Russian forces in Martynovka. A glance at the topographic map reveals Martynovka’s strategic significance: situated just 5 kilometers northwest of Sudzha on elevated ground, it sits at the foot of the R200 highway—a crucial artery for troop movements and logistical supplies.
Securing the front line beyond Martynovka is a critical priority. If this position were to fall into Russian hands, the defense of Sudzha would be severely compromised. Martynovka’s elevated location, proximity to Sudzha, and access to a key logistical supply route make it a strategic linchpin that could greatly enhance Russian control over the area.
