The Meat Grinder: Russia’s Ukraine War β Desperate, Failing
This ain’t some goddamn video game. War is measured in blood and dirt, not kill counts. What weβre seeing out of Ukraine, day after day, ain’t progress for Russia. It’s a slow bleed. These YouTube reports, raw as they are, paint a picture of an army on the ropes, fueled by desperation and throwing bodies into the grinder. We’re talking about tactics so crude theyβd make a WWII general wince, and losses so staggering they’re measured in lifetimes, not just days. Forget the Kremlin’s propaganda β the truth is in the mud and the drone footage. Russia’s Ukraine war is a study in failure, and these reports are flashing red.
Key Takeaways: Frontline Desperation and Strategic Miscalculations
Human Wave Attrition Warfare: Russia’s meat grinder tactics in the Pokrovsk direction are costing them dearly. Reports indicate they are sending undertrained conscripts and even wounded soldiers on crutches into assaults. This isnβt strategy; it’s desperation. Casualty rates are astronomical, with Ukrainians claiming up to 400 Russian losses a day in this sector alone. Drone footage confirms fields littered with Russian dead β a grim testament to this brutal approach.
Drone Warfare Dominance: Ukrainian drone units are effectively decimating Russian infantry assaults. Small, exposed Russian groups are easily detected and eliminated by drones. This tech advantage allows Ukraine to inflict heavy casualties and disrupt Russian advances with deadly precision. The battlefield is no longer just about artillery; it’s about who controls the skies with these buzzing death machines.
Logistical and Industrial Weak Points Exposed: Ukraine is hitting Russia where it hurts β deep inside Russian territory. Strikes on airbases like Millerovo, ammunition depots near Novocherkassk, and fuel refineries like Novoshakhtinsk are crippling Russia’s ability to sustain its offensive. The destruction of the Kamensky Chemical Plant, producing rocket fuel and explosives, is a critical blow to Russiaβs war machine. These aren’t just pinprick attacks; they are calculated strikes aimed at dismantling Russiaβs logistical backbone.

Camouflage and Night Vision Failures: In the Kursk direction, Russian forces blundered into a massacre due to basic camouflage failures. Switching between white winter gear and no camo as the snow melted resulted in open-ground slaughter. The deployment of North Korean troops, even with night assaults, was negated by Ukraine’s advanced night vision tech (ENVG-B), turning night attacks into βtarget practice.β This isn’t just bad luck; itβs incompetence at the command level.
Morale Collapse and Desertion: The plummeting life expectancy for Russian soldiers β down to as low as two weeks in some sectors β is crushing morale. Reports of soldiers wandering into cemeteries, awaiting their fate, underscore the psychological toll. Low voluntary recruitment and soldiers paying bribes to avoid combat duty point to a deeper rot within the Russian ranks. You canβt win a war when your soldiers believe they are walking dead.
Strategic Setbacks and Ukrainian Counter-Offensives: Ukraineβs operation near Berdin in the Kursk direction forced Russia to divert troops, relieving pressure elsewhere and disrupting Russian offensives. Despite Russian gains in Russkoye Porechnoye, the strategic initiative seems to be shifting. Ukraine isn’t just defending; they are demonstrating the capacity to push back and exploit Russian weaknesses.
Rotting from the Head Down: A Military Assessment
What these reports make brutally clear is that Russiaβs military is operating on fumes. They’re throwing bodies at the problem because they lack the training, equipment, and, frankly, the brains to do anything else. The βdesperate, failingβ descriptor isn’t hyperbole; itβs an accurate assessment of a military machine grinding itself to pieces. The reliance on mass infantry assaults, the logistical vulnerabilities, the camouflage blunders β these arenβt isolated incidents. They are symptoms of a systemic failure at the operational and strategic levels. Russia is paying a horrific price in manpower and materiel for minimal, if any, gains. This trajectory is unsustainable.

Today, there are a lot of interesting updates from the Pokrovsk direction.
Here, the new Russian assault vector sees Russian generals desperate to keep up their momentum, throwing undertrained soldiers into relentless day-and-night human wave assaults. With losses so severe, Russians have even sent wounded soldiers on crutches back into battle, resulting in bodies of fallen soldiers slowly piling up in the fields.
The goal of the Russian forces in this area is to take the town of Udachne and the open fields around it, creating a staging ground for the encirclement of Pokrovsk from the western flank of the city. Russian forces are forced to go around, as they lack the reserves necessary to launch frontal assaults on Pokrovsk. The Institute for the Study of War recently stated that Russians are sending newly recruited soldiers straight to the frontline with barely a few weeks of basic training, underscoring the Russian manpower issue. Furthermore, Russians lack the sufficient air support needed to dismantle and eliminate Ukrainian forces holding up in fortified high-rise buildings and industrial zones.
To take Udachne, Russian forces rely heavily on pure infantry assaults to storm the Ukrainian positions across the field to reach the town. These infantry assaults are usually made up of groups of up to three soldiers, fifteen to twenty meters apart, to reduce the risk posed by Ukrainian FPV kamikaze drone strikes. Reports from Ukrainian soldiers on the ground indicate that Russians launch these assaults around the clock, putting intense pressure on Ukrainian defenders, while at a high cost in human life.
Russians use the terrikon north of Novovasylivka to observe Ukrainian positions in Udachne and the surrounding area. Russian forces, accumulated in Solone and Novovasylivka, then move through the tree lines and open fields to attack Udachne directly, while the Solona River shields Russian assault groups from direct Ukrainian counterattacks from below.
However, the Russian assault groups move at a slow pace as they are on foot, which means that the Ukrainian drone operators can quickly detect the Russian assault groups while they are still on the approach. This has led to Ukrainians relying heavily on drone units to monitor and eliminate the Russian infantry, eliminating the Russian infantry assaults with deadly efficiency. As the Russian assault groups are also very small, they generally do not have the required weight to breach Ukrainian defenses; instead, they form a constant stream of attackers that are meant to overwhelm Ukrainians in the long run. However, this has turned out to be a very costly strategy for the Russians, precisely because the small infantry groups don’t have the hitting power of a larger assault. This makes them easier to deal with individually, as Ukrainians inflict up to four hundred Russian casualties a day in the Pokrovsk direction alone.
Combat footage of a Ukrainian drone operator in the area reveals the reality of Russian assaults where dozens, if not hundreds, of dead Russian soldiers are scattered across the fields south of Udachne. To make it worse, Russians often can’t or don’t retrieve their wounded, leaving them to die in the fields instead. Russian commanders were, however, in dire need of reserves to keep up the momentum of the assaults. In desperation, they even ordered their wounded soldiers back into the fight, as footage shows how two wounded Russian soldiers were walking through the fields on crutches toward Ukrainian positions, without communicating any intent to surrender. While these Russian soldiers could barely walk, they were still assaulting Ukrainian positions, leaving Ukrainian drone operators little choice but to eliminate them regardless.
Overall, the Russian offensive effort on the western flank of Pokrovsk is rapidly becoming unsustainable for the Russians due to the high attrition rates of their tactic. Russian voluntary recruitment is at an all-time low, with Russians having to promise outlandish signing bonuses to sign new recruits, with Russian soldiers reporting they use their signing bonus to pay off their commanders so they do not have to go on assault. This all underlines the Russian issue of high casualty rates that often far exceed the pre-war populations of the towns that are being fought over, with Russians consistently losing men in the thousands just to take one village.

Today there is a lot of news from the Russian Federation.
Here, Ukrainians launched a bold and coordinated campaign of long-range strikes targeting critical infrastructure in Russiaβs Rostov, Krasnodar, and Chechnya regions. By crippling airbases, ammunition depots, and logistical hubs supporting the Donbas offensive, these strikes delivered a significant blow to the Russian Pokrovsk and Kurakhove offensive operations.
The latest development occurred when Ukrainian forces launched a massive drone strike against the Millerovo airbase in Russiaβs Rostov region. This high-profile attack, involving 15 drones, showcased Ukraineβs growing capability to target not only deep into Russian territory but also aiming at objects that are known to be severely guarded by air defense. While Russian sources claimed no personnel or equipment losses and released footage of their alleged repulse of the attack, the same images were later used by military analysts to geolocate the approximate point of the strike.
A technical and operational facility that performs maintenance and routine repairs on aircraft based at the airfield is located in the designated area. The Russian 31st Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Aerospace Forces, equipped with Su-30SM and Su-35 fighter jets, is stationed at the Millerovo airbase. Tactical aviation takes off from the base to participate in combat operations against Ukraine. Hence, the attack aims to directly disrupt the air support for the Russian troops in Donbas which will benefit Ukrainian forces. The second major strike focused on an ammunition depot near Novocherkassk, also in Rostov Oblast, reportedly used by Russiaβs 150th Motorized Rifle Division. The December 22 attack destroyed a substantial munitions stockpile, significantly reducing Russian firepower in frontline operations. The destruction of this depot also complicates resupply efforts, further straining Russian logistics that are already in a vulnerable position.
The third target of Ukraineβs recent strikes was the Novoshakhtinsk Oil Refinery, a critical facility in Rostov Oblast that supplies fuel to Russian military operations. On December 18, a coordinated drone and missile assault caused significant damage, igniting a fire at the catalytic cracking unit. This refinery, processing 7.5 million tons of oil annually, is now fully offline, cutting off a vital source of fuel for Russian forces and dealing a logistical blow to their war effort.
Another critical target was the Kamensky Chemical Plant, hit by a Storm Shadow missile strike several days ago. This facility produces rocket fuel, explosives, and ammunition components essential to Russiaβs wartime production. The attack caused severe damage to key buildings, disrupting the supply of crucial materials for Russian missile systems and ammunition. The strike also demonstrated Ukraineβs precision capabilities, marking one of the boldest uses of Western-provided long-range missiles on Russian territory despite initial claims that they are only allowed to be used in the Kursk region.
These attacks also highlight the evolving strategy of combining drones and precision-guided missiles to target a diverse range of critical infrastructure. Drones are often used to initially offload Russian air defense and make the decision-making process for its operators as hard as possible. Then it is easier to use the benefits of the more expensive missiles to cause significant damage with pinpoint accuracy.
Another significant Ukrainian strike targeted a Chechen Akhmat unit base in Grozny, Republic of Chechnya, employing a variety of drone types. While Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov claimed that two drones were successfully intercepted, subsequent footage and eyewitness accounts revealed at least four powerful explosions at the military installation. This base, a critical hub for deploying Chechen forces to Ukraine, suffered substantial damage, highlighting the reach and precision of Ukraine’s expanding strike campaign.
Overall, by focusing on airbases, fuel production, ammunition stockpiles, and industrial facilities in Russiaβs rear, Ukraine aims to weaken the ability of the enemy to sustain its military operations in Donbas. The strikes not only disrupt supply chains but also force the Kremlin to divert resources to repair and defense efforts, creating new vulnerabilities across multiple fronts. The intensity and precision of these operations reflect a deliberate shift in Ukraineβs approach, signaling its ability to escalate pressure on Russia while undermining its logistical and industrial base. As the war continues, these strikes represent a significant challenge for Russian forces struggling to adapt to the growing sophistication of Ukrainian tactics.

Today there are a lot of interesting updates from the Pokrovsk direction.
Here, desperately attempting to reach Myrnohrad before winter halts their advance, Russian forces ramped up the intensity of their assaults on the townβs defenses to up to ten times per day. However, the success rate of these attacks is so low that, as the recently released reports reveal, it single-handedly dropped the average life expectancy of Russian soldiers in this sector to just two weeks.
The main Russians goal here is to reach the outskirts of Myrnograd and initiate urban combat. Securing a foothold in the town’s southern part would provide a base for operations and facilitate further incremental gains through urban warfare. Failure to establish this foothold now would force them to contend with muddy terrain, delaying advances until the ground freezes in January or February.
Aware of the severe time constraints, Russian generals are intensifying their efforts, reportedly launching up to ten assaults daily on Myrnograd alone. However, none of these attacks have succeeded, largely due to the resilience of the Ukrainian 38th Marine Brigade. Footage highlights well-established trenches, constructed precisely according to military guidelines and proportions. This demonstrates how Ukrainian forces capitalized on Russia’s failure to make gains over months of assaults, using the time to strengthen their defenses and fortify positions to counter Russian offensives effectively.
Ukrainian forces have honed their artillery tactics to devastating effect, targeting Russian troop concentrations and adding significantly to their casualties. To preempt assaults, Ukrainian forces track Russian stormtroopers to their hiding spots in the nearby mines of Novohrodivka. These positions are then subjected to precise artillery strikes, coordinated with reconnaissance drones. In one striking instance, a single accurate artillery round demolished an entire building filled with Russian soldiers, underscoring the precision of Ukrainian artillery and its critical role in neutralizing Russian assault units before they can even launch an attack.
Despite the losses, due to their hurry to achieve strategic results during winter, the Russian command opts to proceed with assaults on the Ukrainian positions near Myrnograd. Combat footage from the area reveals Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian forces trying to establish positions in trenches. Notably, large Russian assault groups of up to 20 soldiers break up in panic and disorganization after Ukrainian drone strikes start, canceling their assault as a whole. Most Russian soldiers are tracked and eliminated in trenches and dugouts one by one so that Ukrainian soldiers can physically retake positions afterward. Combat footage from the area reveals Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian forces trying to establish positions in trenches. Notably, large Russian assault groups of up to 20 soldiers break up in panic and disorganization after Ukrainian drone strikes start, cancelling their assault as a whole.
The relentless casualties are taking a devastating toll on Russian morale. Disturbingly, combat footage has emerged showing soldiers, overcome by despair and a sense of impending death, wandering into local cemeteries to sit and await the inevitable strike from Ukrainian drones. This harrowing phenomenon highlights the profound psychological strain on Russian forces, many of whom perceive their survival as hopeless in such dire conditions. Reports suggest that the life expectancy for Russian soldiers on the frontlines has plummeted to just two weeks, with marginally better prospectsβaround four weeksβin quieter sectors. These grim statistics are particularly stark among volunteer recruits, who often lack sufficient training and equipment to survive in such a brutal environment. This rapid turnover of poorly prepared reinforcements is not only eroding Russia’s manpower reserves but also severely compromising its ability to sustain prolonged military operations.
Overall, the catastrophic attrition of Russian forces near Myrnohrad underscores the broader operational inefficiencies and strategic desperation of the Russian military. The decision to press relentless assaults, despite minimal tactical gains and devastating losses, reflects a leadership more focused on achieving symbolic deadlines than on sustainable military planning. The alarming two-week life expectancy for Russian soldiers not only highlights the human cost of this approach but also suggests an accelerating depletion of manpower that will have cascading effects on their ability to maintain offensives elsewhere.

Today, there is interesting news from the Kursk direction.
Here, the Russian militaryβs attempt to counter Ukraineβs advance towards Bolshoye Soldatskoye turned into a slaughter due to poor planning and disastrous miscalculations. Russian forcesβ desperation to stem the Ukrainian bulge in the east has led them to rush in their soldiers in suicidal assaults, overlooking a crucial detail in choosing the wrong camouflage, which Ukrainians exploited with deadly efficiency.
Russian forcesβ primary objective is to erode Ukraineβs foothold around Berdin, fearing it could become a springboard for further advances toward Bolshoye Soldatskoye. Holding this village is critical for Russia, as its loss would negate hard-fought gains west of Malaya Loknya, which were achieved at the cost of thousands of casualties. If Ukraine secures and expands its position toward Bolshoye Soldatskoye, Russia will be forced to divert significant reinforcements, which are unavailable due to the mounting losses. With another Ukrainian bulge in the region deemed unacceptable, Russia has shifted its focus to Russkoye Porechnoye, a small but strategically vital village along a key supply route, which could serve as a staging ground for future Ukrainian offensives.
To counter Ukraineβs movements, Russian forces redeployed troops from the western part of the salient, partially sacrificing their offensive there. With these reinforcements, they launched a series of infantry assaults to overwhelm Ukrainian positions with sheer numbers, a tactical advantage the Russians still possess for the time being. The reliance on mass assaults in Russian doctrine, often with minimal coordination and outdated tactics, has been costly but occasionally effective. Mass infantry assaults require a lot of men, which means that last-minute changes are unfeasible on such a large scale. This led to the Russian approach suffering from an unexpected major vulnerability – the rapidly changing weather conditions in the Kursk region. One moment, the battlefield is covered in snow; the next, the ground is bare and muddy. Ukrainian forces exploited this unpredictability, turning Russiaβs poor camouflage decisions into a death sentence.
The first wave of Russian attackers stormed Ukrainian positions on snow-covered terrain without winter camouflage, making them easy targets for Ukrainian artillery, drones, and FPV kamikaze strikes. As footage from the battlefield shows, the result was fields littered with Russian corpses, struck down in open ground with little to zero cover.
Realizing their mistake, Russian commanders issued white camouflage gear to their troops for the next assault. However, the snow unexpectedly melted, leaving them dressed in all white, in stark contrast to the dark, muddy terrain. This made them even more visible, leading to another massacre as Ukrainian forces rained down artillery fire and drone strikes, decimating entire Russian assault groups.
Russian officers, desperate for progress, threw North Korean forces into battle in large formations of 20 to 100 soldiers, particularly in night assaults. The assumption was that attacking under the cover of darkness would improve their chances of breaking through Ukrainian defenses en masse. However, Ukraine had recently received advanced ENVG-B night vision goggles, allowing its troops to spot enemy movements with extreme clarity, even in total darkness, fog, and snowstorms. This technology marked enemy silhouettes, giving Ukrainian forces a massive advantage in night combat. As a result, huge portions of the North Korean forces were destroyed before they even reached Ukrainian positions.
Another wave of North Korean soldiers was sent during the day, with geolocated footage revealing shocking images, like those seen during the Korean War 70 years ago, with large hordes attacking under heavy artillery shelling. Those who survived established some presence at Russkoye Porechnoye, but only at the cost of staggering losses. Once in the village, they faced relentless Ukrainian artillery and drone strikes, forcing many to either retreat or die in place.
Overall, the latest developments confirm that Ukraineβs Berdin operation has had both an immediate and strategic impact. Ukraine has successfully thinned enemy lines by forcing Russia to redirect troops from the western Kursk salient and relieving the Russian pressure on Malaya Loknya. As a result, Russiaβs offensive on the western front has lost momentum, likely due to depleted reserves and logistical strain. Despite Russians gaining some ground in Russkoye Porechnoye, the redirection of Russian forces means that Malaya Loknya will remain firmly under Ukrainian control, highlighting the failure of Russiaβs costly mass infantry assaults to achieve any meaningful gains.

How Ukraine Successfully Invaded Russia: The Battle for Kursk | Battle Board | Daily Mail
After more than two years of Ukraine holding back Russia’s invasion, this summer Kyiv flipped the script and sent its troops marching into Russia. Using Western weapons and tactics to devastating effect, Ukrainian troops captured more territory in just a few weeks than Russia had taken in the preceding months. Putin was forced to pull troops out of Ukraine to rush back and defend the homeland and, when that failed to get the Ukrainians out, he had to turn to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un for help.
