Frontline Glimpses: Decimation by Drone – North Korea’s Brutal Introduction to Ukrainian Skies

The digital battlefield of Ukraine has become a proving ground for modern warfare, and few technologies have reshaped the conflict as dramatically as drones. But beyond the now-familiar narrative of Ukrainian ingenuity versus Russian aggression, a darker, less anticipated chapter is unfolding: the introduction of North Korean forces into the meat grinder of this war. Whispers turned to stark visual evidence as videos began to surface – raw, unfiltered glimpses captured by Ukrainian drone operators. These aren’t sanitized news reports; they are the brutal, immediate recordings of conflict, often ending with the sickening thud of ordnance impacting flesh and metal. What these clips reveal is not just the devastating effectiveness of Ukrainian drone warfare, but also the grim reality facing newly deployed North Korean soldiers – men seemingly unprepared for the asymmetrical terror rained down from above. These aren’t seasoned veterans facing a peer adversary; these are soldiers thrown into a drone-saturated environment, learning a harsh and unforgiving lesson in modern combat.

Key Insights from Drone Footage: North Koreans in the Crosshairs

  • FPV Drone Precision Strikes: Multiple videos (Video 1) showcase the ruthless efficiency of Ukrainian First-Person View (FPV) drones. These aren’t indiscriminate artillery barrages; they are targeted surgical strikes eliminating individual soldiers with chilling precision. The footage conveys a sense of relentless pursuit, with drones hunting down North Korean troops one by one.
  • "Meat Wave" Tactics Fail Spectaculary (Video 2): One video title refers to a disastrous "North Korean meat wave assault." This term evokes images of outdated human wave tactics, seemingly ill-suited to the modern battlefield dominated by aerial surveillance and precision munitions. The implication is a staggering loss of life for North Korean units attempting such maneuvers in open terrain vulnerable to drone and artillery fire. The mention of a Stryker vehicle pursuing fleeing soldiers further highlights the disorganized retreat following these failed assaults.
  • Ideological Motivation vs. Battlefield Reality (Video 3): Reports from the ground, corroborated by captured documents, suggest North Korean soldiers are arriving with a high degree of ideological fervor, perhaps exceeding that of some Russian conscripts. This dedication, however, seems tragically mismatched with the realities of drone warfare. Initial reports indicate a shocking naivete, with North Korean troops initially moving in large, exposed formations, making them easy targets for Ukrainian drones. While adapting over time, their early losses appear to have been catastrophic.

  • Rumors of Extreme Measures (Video 3): Disturbing accounts allege that North Korean forces have killed Ukrainian soldiers attempting to surrender. If substantiated, these claims point to a brutal and uncompromising approach to warfare, further fueling the intensity of the conflict and potentially violating established rules of engagement.
  • Forensic Evidence and International Interest (Video 3): The Washington Post report mentioned in Video 3’s description highlights the discovery of North Korean bodies and captured equipment. The fact that both British and South Korean officials have reportedly collected DNA samples underscores the international interest in confirming and understanding North Korea’s role in this conflict. This adds a layer of geopolitical intrigue to the already devastating human cost.
  • Tactical Deficiencies Exposed (Video 3): Captured documents reportedly criticize North Korean units for entering battle unprepared, lacking critical intelligence on enemy positions, drone launch sites, and artillery locations. This suggests a failure in integration with Russian command structures or a disregard for modern reconnaissance practices, contributing to their battlefield vulnerabilities.

The Drone War Feedback Loop: Adaptation and Attrition

The Ukrainian drone war is a relentless feedback loop of adaptation. Initial drone successes against exposed North Korean formations likely forced tactical shifts. Reports suggest that while early waves suffered heavily, subsequent North Korean units demonstrated improved combat skills and marksmanship. This evolution, however, doesn’t negate the fundamental vulnerability of manpower-heavy assaults in a drone-saturated environment. The videos, while fragmented, point to a pattern: North Korean soldiers are being thrown into a conflict characterized by remote-controlled death from above, a type of warfare that erodes numerical advantages and favors agility, dispersion, and technological superiority. The battlefield is a harsh teacher, and these initial encounters suggest a brutal learning curve for these new entrants to the Ukrainian war.

Unseen Battles, Unfolding Story

The videos analyzed here offer a raw, unfiltered window into a hidden front within the Ukrainian conflict. They are stark reminders that war is not just lines on a map or geopolitical strategy; it is a visceral, brutal reality played out in trenches and open fields, increasingly under the constant gaze and deadly precision of drones. Scroll down to witness these key video highlights and confront the grim implications of this evolving and devastating conflict.

North Koreans shot Ukrainians who wanted to surrender, DPRK soldiers suddenly disappear from front Kanal13

Documents found among the belongings of the dead North Koreans claim that they killed some Ukrainian soldiers who were trying to surrender. In recent days, after weeks of relentless assaults, North Korean troops have been virtually absent from the battlefield. The Washington Post wrote about this on January 19 , citing Ukrainian military personnel fighting in the Kursk region. The publication notes that, unlike many Russian soldiers, who often appeared to join voluntarily, the North Koreans fought to the death or killed themselves with grenades to avoid capture. Ukrainian special forces showed The Washington Post a list of 23 Korean and Russian phrases along with handwritten New Year’s letters attributed to Kim Jong Un, as well as body armor, gear, first aid kits, military ID cards, a shovel, a Ukrainian-made knife and two advanced Russian assault rifles seized from dead North Korean soldiers in recent weeks. Two handwritten pages of messages from North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un found in the possession of North Korean soldiers were dated December 31 and January 1. The origin of the letters, in which the dictator shared New Year’s wishes and thanked his troops for their fight, is unknown. They may have been sent to troops from Pyongyang or recorded by North Korean soldiers who listened to their commanders read aloud messages from Kim. The fact that the soldiers carried these messages in their pockets while on missions suggests that they were far more ideologically motivated than the Russian occupiers, who often fought under contracts for large salaries. When North Korean troops first appeared on the battlefield last month, Ukrainian soldiers were stunned by the way they moved in large groups and made no attempt to hide from Ukrainian drones. Many were easily killed in the first waves, but in subsequent battles the new arrivals proved capable, physically fit and skilled marksmen, Ukrainians say. North Korean troops, who had previously occupied other Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region, were surprised by the resistance of nine Ukrainian special forces and four infantrymen at the position, Ukrainian soldiers involved in the battle said. But the North Koreans also fought fiercely and aggressively , demonstrating advanced warfare tactics. The Washington Post reviewed images of the body, which the soldiers examined and handed over to Ukrainian authorities. The body has intrigued local and foreign officials, the troops said, adding that both British and South Korean officials have swabbed the body for DNA evidence of North Korean presence on the battlefield. “In modern warfare, where reconnaissance and drone strikes are conducted in real time, failure to break up combat teams into smaller units of two or three members can result in significant losses from enemy drones and artillery,” says one of the documents found among the belongings of the dead North Koreans. The documents also criticize the behavior of some North Korean troops, claiming that they killed some Ukrainian soldiers who tried to surrender . One document says some North Korean troops had a hard time because they were not given “critical details” such as enemy strongholds, drone launch sites or artillery positions, and so entered the battlefield unprepared. http://youtube.com/kanal13az/join – click here and support Kanal13 monthly for distributing more videos and independent journalism
