Today there are a lot of interesting updates from the Kursk direction.
After over a month of preparations, the Russians initiated a new wave of counterattacks to recapture Malaya Lokhnya from two axes of advance, with the engagement of North Koreans. However, Ukrainians took advantage of the operational pause, enabling them to fully prepare some of their most elite units to face the Russian assaults.
The Russian plan in this area was to advance four kilometers along a paved road toward Malaya Lokhnya, aiming for the town near the settlement of Pogrebki. A second route was planned to the west of Malaya Lokhnya, advancing via the road from Novoivanivka. Gaining control of Malaya Lokhnya would allow the Russians to cut off Ukrainian forces positioned north of the town and secure a large northern area, thereby extending their counteroffensive southward toward Sudzha.
Some of Ukraine’s most elite and experienced units, including the 47th Mechanized Brigade, 82nd Airmobile Brigade, 17th Mechanized Brigade, and 80th Airmobile Brigade, were tasked with defending this area. Given these units’ expertise and strong leadership, they anticipated repeated large-scale Russian mechanized assaults along the paved roads to Malaya Lokhnya. Recognizing that the Russians could only attack from two directions due to the limited road access, Ukrainian commanders prepared by deploying substantial drone units and implementing remote mining along these routes to counter the assault.
As anticipated, the Russians launched a major assault north of Pogrebki along the road to Malaya Lokhnya, deploying around fifteen BTRs and over 150 soldiers from the Russian 810th Marine Brigade, reportedly with North Korean troops. The assault hit landmines immediately, wiping out the first three vehicles and an entire platoon before reaching Ukrainian-controlled areas. By the time Russian forces entered Pogrebki, five of the fifteen BTRs had already been destroyed by landmines alone. Ukrainians then destroyed nine more BTRs around Pogrebki using a combination of drones, landmines, and RPGs, forcing a desperate Russian retreat. Only one BTR managed to reach the rear but was soon eliminated, marking the total destruction of the Russian column.
Published footage by the Ukrainian troops from the area reveals that North Korean Type 73 machine guns were discovered scaterred around the eliminated column. This discovery implies the gradual inclusion of North Korean soldiers in Russian storming operations, as their numbers of deployed fighters are slowly growing in Kursk.
Anticipating a coordinated Russian assault from Novoivanivka to align with the attack toward Pogrebki, Ukrainians deployed tanks from the 17th Mechanized Brigade to disrupt Russian force concentrations preparing for the offensive. Combat footage shows Ukrainian tanks conducting a raid on Russian positions in nearby forests. Here, two Russian offensive groups remain besieged in two separate pockets near Malaya Lokhnya after previous unsuccessful attempts to break them out by the counterattacks of the main Russian forces. To make the situation more disastrous for the Russians, it has just been exposed that the field commanders in this area lied about the success of the assaults on Malaya Lokhnya and the frontline changes, which led to catastrophic results for the next stage of their planned operation.
Previously, Russian low-level field commanders operating near Pogrebki fabricated reports that contradicted the actual situation on the ground in the Kursk direction. According to these reports, a mechanized counterattack by the 810th Marine Brigade had successfully retaken control of the villages of Pogrebki, Orlovka, Staraya Sorochina, and Novaya Sorochina. The commanders claimed that the capture of these settlements brought Russian forces directly to the outskirts of Malaya Lokhnya.
This false narrative led to a complete lack of situational awareness on the battlefield. In reality, the Russians did not control these settlements. Instead, a hundred Russian soldiers from the broken units were actually encircled with no chance to break out. In an attempt to secretly salvage the situation and align with the reports submitted to higher command, Russian commanders ordered repeated waves of assaults. Such desperate attempts to fix the situation were not communicated to the Ministry of Defense and therefore failed to secure the necessary support, which led to even higher unreported losses, significantly depleting the reserves created for the counteroffensive operation.
This approach is common among low-level Russian commanders, who often report the success of their operations prematurely, sometimes days before the reported territorial gains are actually achieved. In this particular section of the front, however, there was no real advancement by Russian forces. The key issue in this area was that the initial assault forces, which were claimed to have secured the reported territorial gains were running out of supplies and were at the highest risk of being destroyed.
Due to the unawareness of unreported losses, Russian higher-ups in the Ministry of Defense expected the low-level commanders to launch assaults directly against Malaya Lokhnya, assuming that the previously reported positions had been captured. However, this was not feasible, partly as there were no reserves available for the assault and no forces stationed at the supposedly secured territories. This discrepancy raised questions both among Russian leadership and the public as to why the planned counterattacks had not progressed according to plan.
It quickly became apparent that the Russian brigade commanders had exhausted their reserves while attempting to capture the territories they had falsely reported as already secured. This failure also revealed the existence of two pockets of Russian troops left encircled as a result of the botched assaults. The shortages of supplies, ammunition, and support eventually led to the complete destruction of one of these encircled groups, further exacerbating the already deteriorating situation.
Overall, the poor planning and execution of the third wave of the Russian counteroffensive operation had led to disastrous results, and hundreds of soldiers with no way out. The Russian commanders still reported that these units were not encircled but that they actually held the ground, creating significant gaps in battlefield awareness between low and high-level commanders. As a result, the subsequent waves of assaults were repelled, and the failure to capture the ground has already led to the destruction of half of the encircled troops in one of two pockets near Malaya Lokhnya. Despite the heavy losses, recent reports suggest that the Russian command is accumulating both elite marines and paratroopers from the 83rd Airborne Brigade, 155th Marine Brigade, and 51st Airborne Regiment. They are hoping to expand the scope of their assaults in all areas of Kursk, while the forces in the Malaya Lokhnya-Pogrebki axis are operating from ground zero after disastrous results of failed attacks.

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Bakhmut direction.
The most interesting news comes from the northern flank of Chasiv Yar. Here, the Russians attempted to establish a foothold on the western side of the canal to attack Chasiv Yar from the north. However, Ukrainians thwarted this operation on time, forcing Russians to yet again focus on casualty-heavy assaults in the Kanal district for marginal gains.
To achieve the goal of expanding assaults on Chasiv Yar from the north, the main goal of Russian forces became the village of Kalinivika. This village, located north of the town, is significant for the Russians because an overground passage over the canal would enable Russians to cross it. Russians want to exploit this crossing to establish a bridgehead and use it to launch further attacks on Chasiv Yar. Such an approach could enable Russians to attack Ukrainian rear positions and stretch their lines, which could cause Ukrainians to withdraw from the Kanal district.
In one such assault, Russians managed to cross the canal to establish positions on the other side. Combat footage shows an MT-LB armored transport carrying ten Russian soldiers across the canal. Subsequently, the squad dismounted from the vehicle to establish positions in the nearby trenches. However, unfortunately for the Russians, they were immediately targeted by a kamikaze drone, which wounded a third of the assault squad. This caused panic among the whole team, which dispersed while the MT-LB drove off to the northwest, leaving everyone behind. The prompt Ukrainian strike against the Russian infantry group suggests that Ukrainian forces have extensive visibility in the area. Institute For the Study of War assesses that the Russian infantry group likely did not survive the assault and that Russian troops could not establish enduring positions in the area due to this particular attack. While the fate of the Russian unit remains unknown, Ukrainian sources reported that the unit got so far because it got lost, and then it was reportedly eliminated.
After the failed operation, Ukrainians took advantage of the disorganized and dispersed state of Russians in the area to launch a counterattack to retake the lost parts of Kalinivka. BILD assesses that the Ukrainians were successful and retook Kalinivka from the Russians, effectively diminishing their gains by pushing them to the eastern outskirts of the village.
As a result of the failure to advance on the Kanal residential district from the flanks, Russian commanders decided to intensify heavy casualty-inducing frontal assaults on the Kanal district. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky stated that Russians are trying to take it at all costs. It was noted that Russians used an unusually high number of infantry fighting vehicles in combination with T-Ninety-M tanks; many of these were successfully destroyed by Ukrainian anti-tank guided missile
and drone operators.
Russian Airforce bombardments with glide bombs collapsed large sections of high-rises at the eastern edges of the district, while rubble collapsed and blocked many hallways and parts of seemingly intact parts of buildings. This made the buildings untenable for any defensive positions, forcing the Ukrainians to withdraw from them and leaving weak points for Russian fighters to exploit.
Geolocated footage shows a squad of eight Russian airborne troops crossing a road from a seized building and taking up positions in the Chasiv Yar repair plant. Another combat video shows airborne troops clearing out the Ukrainian positions in a high-rise building. After that, the Russians raise their flag over the building. Based on this footage, we can see that the Russian fighters advanced up to Obraztsova Street. To the right of the street are five-story high-rise buildings seen in the video. These buildings enable Russians to have strong firing positions. Then again, Ukrainians on the other side of the street are also in high-rises, so both Russians and Ukrainians diminish any chances of either having fire control here…

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Bakhmut direction.
The most interesting updates come from the southern flank of Chasiv Yar. Here, the Russians intensified their assaults, reinforced their striking groups, and attempted to conduct an offensive operation across the canal in hopes of cutting off Ukrainian forces in the Kanal district.
After Russian forces consolidated control over the large forest to the east of the canal, the Russian commanders started devising a new plan. The forest provided cover from detection by drones and further FPV drone strikes or artillery strikes, so Russians used it to accumulate large forces for two new assault directions. The forest enables a decent staging ground for a new assault direction to the south of the Kanal district and for assault towards the Novy district to the west of the canal.
The Russian plan here was to cross the canal, since this particular section of it is going underground, providing Russians with stable soil to cross over it. Afterward, the goal of the Russians was to establish positions in another forest to the west of the canal pipes; in order to do this, they would need to establish another foothold. The reason why Russians want to establish a bridgehead here is that it will allow them to covertly accumulate even more forces.
Such a staging ground would enable direct assaults on the Novy residential area to the north of the forest. Ukrainian defenses here are not as strong as in the high-rise area, as this district consists of only small residential houses, which do not give Ukrainians powerful firing positions. Unlike reinforced high-rise buildings, these houses are also easier to destroy by artillery, which explains why Russians would prioritize assaults on the Novy district over the Kanal district.
If Russians managed to take the Novy district in further assaults, they would effectively cut off the main supply road to forces in the Kanal district, forcing the Ukrainians to withdraw from the area. By uppercutting Novy, Russians would overcome the primary Ukrainian defenses of Chasiv Yar in the Kanal district, which could risk a withdrawal to the western side of the water barrier.
Despite establishing a staging ground, Russians encountered a series of major problems.
The staging ground in the forest is isolated from roads, so Russians can only deploy infantry squads to conduct assaults on foot. On top of that, the infantry has to walk on foot all the way to the forest. Such process is time consuming and it delays Russian response period, buying more time for Ukrainian defenders.
Moreover, the above-ground crossing is in the open between the two forests on each side, which would enable the Ukrainians to destroy any troops crossing the canal. With full-time drone observation of the movement of troops and equipment over the canal that isn’t already destroyed, Ukrainians can deploy and prepare troops in the Novy district for a Russian assault heading their way. With Russian infantry being forced to move through a narrow river valley in an open area on their way to execute combat missions, they often ended up being targets of FPV drone strikes.
Furthermore, fighting in the western forest would be troublesome for the Russians, as their vehicles would not be able to move through. If we look at the 3D map, we can see that the area is not only densely covered with trees but also has a very difficult, uneven terrain, allowing us to move only on foot. Such a setting would isolate Russian infantry on the other side without significant firepower. Besides, it would be increasingly difficult for Russian aircraft to determine the locations of their troops and Ukrainians in the dense forest. Any glide bomb strike, therefore, presents a significant risk of friendly fire, making supporting airstrikes very unlikely.
Nonetheless, despite all the reasons that made an assault across the canal inadvisable, Russians decided to proceed with this offensive operation. Ukrainian fighters reported that Russians sent groups of infantry across the canal and noted that they did not last long.
During the assaults, Russians managed to cross the canal, enter the forest, and establish positions close to the outskirts of Novy district.
