Here, Ukraine launched the biggest attack yet against critical Russian infrastructure, targeting facilities that are pivotal to Russia’s war efforts and economic stability by using over 100 drones and missiles in massive multi-wave strikes in a single night.
The first and most significant attack was on a microelectronics plant in Bryansk, a critical asset for Russian military production. This plant manufactures microelectronics for missiles, air defense systems, drones, and electronic warfare technology. By striking this facility, Ukraine dealt a substantial blow to Russia’s ability to maintain and expand its military capabilities, especially in the production of advanced weaponry. This is especially important as Russia is under sanctions from Western countries and has limited access to many technologies. Destroying Russia’s production capacity causes significant problems and directly aids Ukraine’s efforts to defend its civilians and military personnel.
Also in Bryansk, the Ukrainians targeted the local chemical plant that produces components for Russian cruise missiles, and tube-launched rocket artillery ammunition. The plant’s disruption directly impacts Russian artillery production and rocket fuel supplies. To make this possible, Ukrainian forces destroyed two air defense systems in the region before the main strikes.
The second strike was on the Engels air base fuel depot and marked a calculated continuation of earlier operations by Ukrainian forces. This depot, critical for supplying aviation fuel to Russia’s strategic bombers used in missile attacks against Ukrainian cities, was deliberately targeted to deplete any remaining reserves. To further disrupt this, Ukrainian forces also targeted a glide bomb and cruise missile warehouse located in Engels as well as the refinery in Saratov, located on the opposing side of the Volga River. The third Ukrainian drone strike was against a gas compressor station in the Krasnodar region, which is a part of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline, which transports natural gas from Russia to Europe. This is the last remaining profit-generating pipeline for Russian gas towards Europe and it represents a crucial source of revenue for funding the Kremlin’s war efforts. Even though the level of damage is unknown, and Russian authorities claim all drones were successfully brought down, by targeting this infrastructure, Ukraine aimed to disrupt Moscow’s economic lifelines while increasing pressure on European countries to rethink their reliance on Russian energy supplies.
Ukrainians targeted the Kazanorgsintez chemical plant in Tatarstan, producing elements for armored vehicles, explosives, and other military components. Reports indicate significant damage to fuel tanks and nearby infrastructure, which will disrupt the work of the plan and further hinder Russia’s war industry.
As part of the wave of strikes, Ukrainians simultaneously hit oil depots in Almetyevsk and the suburbs of Kazan, a similar facility in Oryol, a petrochemicals plant in Berdyansk, and the local alcohol plant in Tambov, destroying thousands of tons of fuel and other valuable materials.
This coordinated operation combined missiles and drones to strike multiple key targets across Russia in rapid succession, overwhelming air defenses. Meanwhile, the Telegram channel Shot reported hearing between five and twelve “loud explosions” in Engels. However, a subsequent update on the channel revised the number to approximately 40 explosions. The Exilenova+ Telegram channel also reported on the burning oil facility in Engels, accompanied by footage from the city. According to initial reports from the Telegram channel Exilenova+, the oil depot at the Crystal Plant of the Russian Reserve was likely hit during the attack. It was also noted online that this facility is used for storing aviation fuel for the local Engels-2 airbase. Engels, located over 750 kilometers away from the nearest Ukrainian-controlled border, has previously been a target of Ukrainian drone attack, with the city housing the the Engels-2 air base. Engels, is home to a major base for Russia’s strategic Tu-160 bombers. These bombers are used by Russian forces during aerial attacks on Ukrainian territory. The Engels-2 airbase officially hosts the 121st Sevastopol Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment and the 184th Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment. These units operate Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers, respectively. Explosions in Engels are not a new occurrence. Such incidents have previously been reported near the local military airfield. For instance, explosions were reported at the Engels airbase on September 17, 2024. At that time, several Tu-95 and Tu-160 strategic bombers were believed to be present at the base. The Russian side also reported a drone strike on Engels and Saratov on August 26. In July, explosions were reported at the Engels airfield in the Saratov region due to a drone attack. The Ukrainian military said Wednesday that it struck a fuel storage depot deep inside Russia, causing a huge blaze at the facility that supplies an important Russian air base.
Russian officials acknowledged a major drone attack in the area, and said that authorities had set up an emergency command center to fight the fire.
Ukraine’s General Staff said that the assault hit the storage facility near Engels, in Russia’s Saratov region, about 600 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border. The depot supplied a nearby airfield used by aircraft that launch missiles across the border into Ukraine, a statement on Facebook said.
Ukraine has been developing its arsenal of domestically produced long-range missiles and drones capable of reaching deep behind the front line as it faces restrictions on the range that its military can fire its Western-supplied missiles into Russia.
The attacks have disrupted Russian logistics in the almost three-year war, which began on Feb. 24, and embarrassed the Kremlin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last year that his country has developed a weapon that could hit a target 700 kilometers away. Some Ukrainian drone attacks have hit targets more than 1,000 kilometers away.
The governor of the Saratov region, Roman Busargin, said that an unspecified industrial plant in Engels sustained damage from the falling drone debris that sparked a fire, but nobody was hurt.
Engels, which has a population of more than 220,000, is located on the left bank of the Volga River, and is home to multiple industrial plants. Saratov, a major industrial city of about 900,000, faces Engels across the river.
“The damage to the oil base creates serious logistical problems for the strategic aviation of the Russian occupiers and significantly reduces their ability to strike peaceful Ukrainian cities and civilian objects. To be continued,” the statement from Ukraine’s General Staff said.
