Drones Taking the Wheel: A New Era for Highway Maintenance π
Hey fellow drone enthusiasts and infrastructure aficionados! As a long-time drone pilot and editor for High Flyers Magazine, I’m buzzing with excitement to share some game-changing insights into how drones are revolutionizing highway maintenance. Forget clunky, dangerous manual inspections and endless road closures; we’re talking about a new era of efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. These YouTube videos we’ve curated showcase how drones are moving beyond recreational use and becoming essential tools for keeping our roads safe and in top shape. From battling graffiti with pinpoint accuracy to meticulously mapping and monitoring projects, these videos offer a glimpse into the future of highway maintenance. The key questions are clear: how can drone technology improve the infrastructure we rely on every day, and what are the latest innovations making it all possible?
Key Takeaways: Sky-High Solutions for Roads on the Ground
Graffiti Gone: The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is leading the charge with drones equipped with spray nozzles, tackling graffiti on hard-to-reach areas like bridges and overpasses. No more risky climbs or costly traffic disruptions – just efficient, targeted paint application by skilled drone operators.

Washington State Department of Transportationβs (WSDOT) graffiti drone pilot program has taken off, literally.
The WSDOT maintenance crew in Tacoma is testing drone technology that can remove graffiti from hard-to-reach places. The drones could make quick work of painting over graffiti on tall retaining walls, bridges, and overpasses.
The drone, built from an Aquiline Endure model, uses a spray nozzle and is linked to a paint supply on the ground, WSDOT said.

IG DRONES – Monitoring Road Infrastructure | Road Survey, Inspection, Mapping, VideographyIG Drones6,112 views | 66 | July 12 2021 14:10:23 (2 comments)[ Read more … ]
Companies building and managing large infrastructure such as roads have considerable potential to use drone data to optimize their operations. The complexity and scale of such projects expose them to many challenges this technology can help solve, including long and costly surveys, early identification of construction mistakes, penalties for missing deadlines, miscommunication between stakeholders and contractors, and volumetric assessment. It can also help stakeholders efficiently survey to avoid financial liabilities post-construction due to lack of maintenance and resultant damage to the environment. Drones can also open up new applications that were previously very hard or costly to access or closely track.
IG DRONE combines the best of both worlds, with the added benefit of an easy workflow and well-integrated, high-quality GPS/GNSS sensors and positioning systems. As IG Drones takes another step towards normalizing the use of drones to carry out several important tasks in the construction of roads, we feel really satisfied to see the purpose behind creating IG Drones finally being served.

Ever wondered how the make or lay a new road surface?
In this video we will show you just what is used in order to do just that!
Equipment used:
A Road Planer WIRTGEN W150I
A Asphalt Paver Vogele Super 1303-3i
1x road roller and a normal roller.
A sweeper
A JCB 3cx
Step one: is to remove the current road surface which is where the Road Planer WIRTGEN W150I comes into it, it will chew up the road surface into what is know as chippings which is loaded into a lorry at the front of the machine. A road sweeper will follow behind making sure no chippings remain. As can be seen in the video at: 0:16 til 02:26
Step two: once swept the Asphalt Paver Vogele Super 1303-3i comes in. This will lay the new surface. A tipper lorry loaded with tarmac will reverse to the front of the paver and tip tarmac into what is known as a hopper, tarmac is then drawn into the back of the machine using an auger, Once the tarmac reaches the back of the machine there is a backplate which is set to a required height. The cap under this plate is what will allow the tarmac to be laid down creating the road surface. This will also push tarmac that is not used along with the paver until a gap is made it under the plate as can be seen in the video at 02:31 til 05:07
Step Three: 2 rollers will roll the tarmac smooth to insure the road surface is pushed down and compacted and sealed together. they will also cool the tarmac down on each pass over. as can be seen in the video at: 05:07
Its as simple as that!!
