In this video, I’ll walk you through the basics of how to create a brain computer interface robot using an Emotiv EEG headset and software to control the DJI RoboMaster robot.
The Imagination Center at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital is also using these Emotiv headsets to let children with cerebral palsy control toys and games when they otherwise would not be able to. We are excited to have collaborated with the Imagination Center on this tutorial to show more people how to make their own brain computer interface robot applications and highlight the impactful outcomes it can have. So, what exactly is a brain computer interface (BCI)? BCIs allows you to control external devices using only your brain activity. For example, you could change the colour of a smart light or move a toy robot forwards.
BCIs use brain activity data to recognize certain thought patterns such as a “push” command. This command is then translated to an action on an external device or software such as “move forwards”, “move backwards”, or “turn light on”.

In this video, we’re using EEG technology to make the connection between the brain and the brain computer interface robot. EEG, or electroencephalography, is a method of measuring electrical activity in the brain. By placing electrodes on the scalp, the Emotiv headset detects different brainwave patterns and interprets them as specific commands. For example, in this project, we’ll be using mental commands like “push” to move the DJI RoboMaster robot forward.
In a future video I’ll walk you through the details of how to write the code that will let you control the robot.
This project is just one exciting example of what you can do with a brain computer interface robot setup. If you enjoyed this, you might want to try some other cool BCI-based projects.
