- Ukraine unleashed fresh drone attacks in Russian-held territory on Friday and Saturday following huge blasts at an air base in Crimea earlier this month. Sevastopol, the home of Russia’s Black Sea fleet in Crimea was among targets hit on Saturday morning.
- The expeditious defeat of Putin is certainly a national-security priority for the United States, though it pales beside the longer-term strategic challenge we face: the rise of an aggressive and hostile China.
- On June 29, JICA held the first of a series of online seminars (four sessions planned in total) intended to share Japan’s knowledge and experience in post-disaster waste management with Ukraine, which is currently facing difficulty in dealing with the large volume of destruction waste that has resulted from Russia’s military invasion.
- 700 contract soldiers from Russia’s 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade, a unit linked to committing war crimes in Kyiv Oblast, are trying but failing to be discharged and get out of Ukraine. Servicemen from the 64th brigade claim their commanders refuse to send back from Ukraine even those soldiers whose contracts with the army expired in May. Instead, they are trying to retain the servicemen by promising to increase the combat pay from RUR 90,000 ($1,500) to RUR 120,000 ($2,000) per month.
- Sevastopol’s Moscow-backed administration said that the Black Sea Fleet’s air force shot down a drone and there were no casualties. A number of attacks have hit Crimea over the past weeks.
- The German government is handing Ukraine three more Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and other weapons as part of a new military aid package. Germany should transfer 15 such systems to Ukraine.
